POSITION SUMMARY

IREX seeks a Regional Manager to coordinate and manage activities in West Africa for the USAID-funded Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders program. The purpose of this program to build the skills of young African leaders to improve the accountability and transparency of government, start and grow businesses, and serve their communities. This program provides young Africa leaders across the continent with opportunities for professional development, networking, mentoring, and a range of support activities. This position is full-time and based in Accra, Ghana . This is a one-year position with the potential for extension. Residents of Ghana preferred.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage and coordinate all program activities within West Africa region, including professional development activities (internships, mentorships, events, and virtual learning opportunities) and networking activities; ensuring that activities fully engage women and other marginalized groups;
  • Communicate regularly and coordinate activities with USAID’s Regional YALI representative and USAID Missions and Embassies throughout We s t Africa;
  • Coordinate closely with colleagues in sub-Saharan Africa and project leadership in Washington, DC;
  • Manage planning and implementation of annual large-scale international event including drawing in sponsors and collaborating closely with alumni board;
  • Conduct on-going outreach and establish funded partnerships wi th private sector institutions throughout We st Africa;
  • Supervise small staff team;
  • Collaborate with and provide capacity-development support as needed to local partner organization;
  • Develop and maintain a strong network of program alumni;
  • Use organizational tools to manage complex and varied activities; manage activity budgets;
  • Contribute to communications and monitoring and evaluation activities as required;
  • Significant travel expected up to 30%.
  • Other duties as assigned

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • At least 5 years of experience in international development; proven track record in successful program implementation; experience with USAID-funded programs preferred;
  • Experience working in sub-Saharan Africa with youth development, education, and training programs; strong working knowledge of regional and local organizations, institutions, and the private sector;
  • Strong understanding of effective approaches for inclusive development for women and other marginalized segments of society;
  • Event planning experience preferred;
  • Excellent convening ability, management, communication, and interpersonal skills;
  • At least two years of experience managing staff and budgets;
  • Strong representational and organizational skills, excellent attention to detail;
  • A Master’s degree in international development, international education or similar field is desired; and,
  • Fluency in English required, with excellent verbal and written communication skills. Proficiency in other relevant languages a plus.
