OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME
The Regional Director’s Office (RDO) supports the Regional Director in the efficient delivery ofhis/her mandate and in the provision of effective leadership and coordination of the work of WHO in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, including partnerships and collaboration with countries, the UN system, international organizations, bilateral and multilateral agencies and other stakeholders. The Office co-ordinates the Regional Director’s engagement and collaboration with Member States, the UN system, development partners, donors and other stakeholders. It is also responsible for coordinating the preparation of policy, technical and managerial briefs on relevant health matters to facilitate the decisions of the Regional Director, and it assists in monitoring compliance in the implementation of specific executive decisions and recommendations. The Office oversees the work of the Regional Office, Country Offices and Inter-Country Support Teams in the EMR Region and the work of the WHO Secretariat with the Member States.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
The incumbent will perform the following duties:
- Coordinate and facilitate the development and implementation of the plan of work for the programmes/units under the Regional Director Office(RDO) Cluster.
- Provide policy, managerial and diplomatic advice to the RD.
- Provide support to the RD on monitoring the implementation for Global Policy Group of WHO (GPG) and the strategic directions of WHO’s work in the Region.
- Facilitate regular review of activities of all RDO Units, including convening regular meetings with heads of Units.
- Follow-up on the implementation of policy decisions of WHO Governing Bodies.
- Ensure smooth and efficient coordination of the work of the Office of the Regional Director.
- In coordination with HRM, lead the recruitment & staffing of positions in the RDO.
- Establish work objectives for all personnel in RDO and conduct staff performance evaluations in accordance with established procedures and deadlines.
- Provide leadership to staff under his/her responsibility; ensure their continuous training and development.
- Promote a culture of high performance, ethical behaviour and integrity in accordance with the Organization’s Policies, Rules and Procedure.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Essential: Master’s degree in public health, international relations or business management
Desirable: Training in public health related issues.
Experience
Essential: At least (15) years of experience at the national and international levels with some years at the international level in a senior management position including experience in developing countries.

- Excellent analytical and writing skills; diplomatic skills.
- Ability to negotiate and engage new partnerships.
- Ability to coordinate teams with different backgrounds in a multicultural environment.
- Experience in guiding and interpreting WHO rules and procedures, including close familiarity with the work of the Regional Office, the Executive Board, the World Health Assembly, and the WHO Regional Committee for EMRO.

REMUNERATION
WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 96,865 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 1913 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
