We are looking for a skilled and experienced country manager to represent British Red Cross in Sierra Leone to deliver the British Red Cross country strategies during a period of rapid growth. Key responsibilities will include developing and maintaining operational relationships, building partnerships and ensuring BRC’s resources are used effectively and accountably to provide maximum impacts on the lives of vulnerable people in Sierra Leone.

In this exciting role you will be part of the West and Central Africa regional team which consists of staff members based across the region and in the London office. You will manage the programme team in country and report to the Head of Region based in London whilst working with counterparts in the Sierra Leone Red Cross, International Federation Red Cross and other national societies.

This is an exciting time for the Sierra Leone and British Red Cross partnership as there is a growth agenda backed by high level organisational commitments. There are new staff, increased budgets, raised expectations and a commitment to effective partnership to meet the needs of vulnerable people in Sierra Leone. The Country Manager is to be a change manager and to ensure the BRC support is coherent, timely and relevant and also to ensure positive coordination and increased coordination among actors nationally. This will include supporting the NS to position themselves nationally as appropriate amongst INGO and others.

We’re looking for someone with demonstrable experience of working in emergency response, recovery and development programmes with a strong track record of working through, and supporting national partner organisations. They will have gained this experienced but working in the humanitarian or international development sector. Additionally it is essential that they have overseas experience, ideally in this region.

We enable vulnerable people at home and overseas to prepare for and respond to emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, we help people recover and move on with their lives.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is a humanitarian institution based in Geneva, Switzerland and a three-time Nobel Prize Laureate. State parties (signatories) to the four Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their Additional Protocols of 1977 (Protocol I, Protocol II) and 2005 have given the ICRC a mandate to protect victims of international and internal armed conflicts. Such victims include war wounded, prisoners, refugees, civilians, and other non-combatants.

The ICRC is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement along with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and 190 National Societies. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Since its creation in 1863, the ICRC's sole objective has been to ensure protection and assistance for victims of armed conflict and strife. It does so through its direct action around the world, as well as by encouraging the development of international humanitarian law (IHL) and promoting respect for it by governments and all weapon bearers. Its story is about the development of humanitarian action, the Geneva Conventions and the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
