Position Overview

The Director of Accounting and Finance is part of the senior leadership team and reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer. The Director will provide both hands-on general accounting support and management of not-for-profit financial operations. This position supervises an Accounting staff and works with the CFO to provide consultation to the Country Director and the Executive Team on strategic accounting matters, financial performance and budget. This position takes a leadership role in developing a culture that enables employees to perform in accordance with LMH objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Budget, Policies & Internal Controls:

  • Designs organization’s financial policies, rules and regulations and ensures adherence.
  • Develops Departmental Fiscal Year budget.
  • Evaluates company processes to reduce risk regarding legal ramifications and compliance.
  • Acts as primary liaison with local banks.
  • Analyzes leases and contracts.

Reporting:

  • Develops and maintains timely and accurate financial statements and reports appropriate for users and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Manages monthly and other periodic financial reporting, including cash flow projections, general ledger reconciliation, budgets and forecasts.
  • Produces quarterly year-end reports for USAID and donors.
  • Analyzes and reviews departmental and grants budgets to actual variances.
  • Recommends, develops and maintains financial databases and computer systems, especially Quickbook Online.
  • Analyzes and manages adherence to reserve policy.
  • Ensures annual audit is scheduled and works with internal and external auditors in completing audits.
  • Documents and maintains complete and accurate supporting information for all financial transactions

Management & Leadership:

  • Manages and directs staff consistent with organizational culture; issues written and oral instructions, assigns duties and examines work for quality, timeliness and conformance to policies and procedures.
  • Manages and motivates staff through recognition; trains, develops, appraises staff, schedules, plans and organizes workload and staff assignments.
  • Liaise with the CFO, Finance Committee and/or Audit Committee as appropriate.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field
  • Minimum 8 years’ financial management experience, not-for-profit preferred; hands-on accounting experience required.
  • Knowledge of GAAP and regulations affecting charities Project management, budgets, financial reporting
  • Advanced MS Office skills (Expert level in Excel) and knowledge of QuickBooks required.
  • Ability to: Supervise and manage Accounting department staff, Multi-task, Work accurately and meet deadlines.
  • Work as part of a team and build relationships.
  • Implement necessary requirements to be compliant and reflects those changes in organizational policies and procedures Strong communication, written and oral, skills including follow-up and documentation Identifying, gathering, analyzing information, while developing alternative solutions to resolve problems.
