SCOPE OF WORK
The IRC Nigeria is currently expanding its education portfolio in the northeast of the country in line with its five-year Strategic Action Plan (SAP). A priority outcome for the country program is that girls and boys enroll in and attend safe, functioning, responsive education services. The IRC aims to both rebuild, reequip, and staff damaged school infrastructure and enhance the quality of education through curriculum improvements in formal and non-formal institutions, with a particular focus on literacy, numeracy and social emotional learning.
In partnership with Creative Associates, the IRC intends to implement a twenty month project under the Education in Emergencies (EiE) component of DFID’s North-East Nigeria Transition to Development Programme (NENTAD) that aims to deliver an effective response to the basic needs of vulnerable people impacted by the crisis in northeast Nigeria. The EiE project will reach more than 100,000 children and adolescents in Borno and Yobe states with quality formal and non-formal education services, including literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional skills.
The project aims to ensure children are gaining literacy, numeracy and social emotional skills in a safe and conducive environment – both in non-formal centers and formal schools – and that children who are falling behind get additional help. The Education Officer will be responsible for ensuring the timeliness of education interventions, and will help ensure that education activities are of quality and relevance, and are tailored to the needs of the most marginalized children.
The position reports to the Program Manager
RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary responsibilities
- Support the implementation education activities in accordance with the project work-plan and objectives of the project.
- Work with M&E staff to develop tools and set up quality assurance mechanisms and checks.
- Work closely with partners to ensure quality programming and extend technical support and supervision to partners on a regular basis.
- Closely monitor the progress of partners, and project activities, collect and manage data, gather feedback from beneficiaries – and use this information to improve the quality of programs.
- Work with schools, inspectors, head-teachers, teachers and learning facilitators in non-formal learning centers, to ensure that staff are receiving the support they need to deliver quality education.
- Provide written and verbal reports to their supervisor

- Any other duties as assigned by the supervisor to enable and develop IRC programs.

Other internal and/or external contacts: grants unit; finance, HR and supply chain departments
PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS: The IRC and IRC workers must adhere to the values and principles outlined in IRC Way – Standards for Professional Conduct. These are Integrity, Service, and Accountability. In accordance with these values, the IRC operates and enforces policies on Beneficiary Protection from Exploitation and Abuse, Child Safeguarding, Anti Workplace Harassment, Fiscal Integrity, and Anti-Retaliation.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- University degree in education or related field
- Three to five years experience working on education programs and/or similar programs with an international or civil society organizations.
- Excellent spoken and technical writing ability in English, including report writing.
- Good computer skills
- Willingness to travel extensively in northeast Nigeria, including to remote and/or insecure locations. Some travel to Yobe may be required.
- Experience working with displaced or otherwise marginalized communities preferred
- Background in education/ experience of implementation of education programming preferred.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The position will be based in Maiduguri, Nigeria with frequent travel throughout Borno state, including to remote and insecure locations. The situation in northeast Nigeria continues to be volatile and the security phase is orange or red depending on location. This is a non-accompanied position
