Electronics Technician
Overall purpose of the job
To undertake preventive and corrective maintenance of laboratory and general electronics equipment in the Centre, to ensure they perform reliably, efficiently, cost-effectively and are safe to use or operate.
Responsibilities
- Carry out preventive maintenance procedures on laboratory equipment.
- Undertake repairs and calibration of broken down equipment and perform safety and operational test runs before handing back to the clients.
- Carry out installation, testing and commissioning of new laboratory equipment.
- Provide training or standard operational procedures of equipment to new users.
- Work alongside the Safety, Health and Environment personnel to ensure equipment, equipment users and environmental safety requirements and regulations are adhered to.
- Advice the clients/users on the status of the condition of existing machines.
- Liaise with equipment manufacturers on technical issues and advice users and laboratory management accordingly.
- Compile and regularly update machine maintenance and repair records.
- Provide updates to Stores on the spares to restock and which ones are obsolete.
- Occasionally attend to the needs of other Units of the Centre (e.g. ICT, conferencing and catering).
- Assist and advice in procuring of new equipment, by providing technical specifications.
- Work alongside contractors to ensure that safety standards of the machines are maintained in the labs.
- Provide technical advice to structural and building engineers on standard laboratory set-up and requirements during renovations.
- Respond to emergency situations during or after hours for the purposes of resolving immediate safety concerns.
- Provide training to students on attachment in the Electronics Section.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements/Qualifications
- Diploma in electrical & electronics engineering with 7 years’ hands-on experience or Higher National diploma in electrical & electronics engineering with 5 years’ hands-on experience in a maintenance environment.
- Candidate must demonstrate knowledge of health and safety in engineering practices.
- Candidate must demonstrate ability to develop an equipment preventative maintenance programme.
- Candidate must demonstrate ability to develop equipment annual budget.
- Experience in a research setting is an added advantage.

- Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors/management, as well as customers.
- Must be able to effectively read, understand and apply manufacturer’s manuals, blueprints, schematics, and flow charts during repair and installation processes.
- To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
