About Centre for Health Works Development and Research

Our partner, the Centre for Health Works, Development and Research is a not-for-profit organization that was established to promote family health; especially women’s health and rights, good governance and community development through the empowerment of women, children and youth.

Some of their work include:

– Collaboration with SHARE Institute USA to provide capacity building on Basic Obsterics and Newborn Care for Community Health Workers
– Implementation of a Comprehensive Integrated Approach to maternal, newborn and child health in collaboration with the Society for Family Health
– Partnership with several organizations including the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood, Women Global Networks on Reproductive Health and Rights and the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health
– Work to address women’s reproductive and sexual health problems through safe motherhood initiatives, sex education, health sector reforms and youth friendly health services

The volunteer’s role

The volunteer will support the Centre for Health Works and Development (CHEDRES) to strengthen community structures in 18 rural communities. As a result, the community structures will be better able to engage with the health care system regarding their needs.

The volunteer will:

– Provide technical support to develop advocacy strategies for beneficiaries and communities

– Identify gaps in the CHEDRES existing knowledge management and learning structures

– Develop comprehensive processes and systems to create, acquire, capture, share and use knowledge to support learning that is in line with the objectives, values, and policies of CHEDRES and the organization’s partners

– Support CHEDRES in program development and fundraising strategies

– Coach and mentor CHEDRES staff on best practices for the implementation and delivery of Cuso’s Gender Equality and Social Inclusion initiatives

Essential Academic Qualifications

University degree and/ or college diploma in gender studies, social sciences, public policy, communications, business adminstration, etc.

Essential Professional Background/Competencies

– Experience developing operational plans and strategies
– Experience in advocacy
– Experience in fundraising
– Experience in project / program coordination / management
– Demonstrated success engaging diverse stakeholders
– Strong research and analysis skills
– Strong communication skills; both written and verbal

Desirable Professional Background/Competencies

– Demonstrated success in data management, the development of processes and procedures that improve organizational efficiency
– Knowledge of development and health issues, preferrably as they relate to Nigeria
– Ability to analyze and apply policy
– Experience working in a non-profit organization

Important information for candidates

Cuso International covers the following costs:

– Return airfare and visa/permit costs
– Accommodation while overseas
– Modest living allowance while overseas
– Modest support for accompanying partners and dependents going on placement with you for 12 months or longer
– The cost of required vaccinations, antimalarial medication and health insurance
– Access to Employee Assistance Program while overseas and upon return
– Travel and accommodation for reintegration debriefing weekend
– Travel and accommodation for the five-day pre-departure training course and in-country training orientation

Fundraising: We ask each volunteer, regardless of placement length, to raise $2,000. All volunteers receive support from Cuso International to help achieve the goal through fundraising. If the volunteer chooses not to fundraise or is unable to achieve the fundraising goal, he/she can make a one-time donation or become a monthly donor to support our work.

E-volunteering: Depending on the nature of the placement, volunteers are encouraged to provide e-volunteering support to the local partner or Cuso International before or after the field placement. Volunteers also have the option of requesting support from an e-volunteer to help them with their work while they are in the field.

CURE International is a Christian nonprofit organization based in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania.

CURE's efforts are focused on providing medical care to children suffering primarily from orthopedic and neurological conditions.

The organization's stated mission is "healing the sick and proclaiming the kingdom of God." The organization operates 10 hospitals in the following countries: Afghanistan, the Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Niger, the Philippines, Uganda, the United Arab Emirates and Zambia.

The organization also runs specialty programs for clubfoot and hydrocephalus in an additional 19 countries including Bangladesh, Honduras and India.

The organization was founded in 1996 by Dr. C. Scott Harrison and his wife, Sally. Ten years earlier, Dr. Harrison traveled to Malawi, Africa to perform spine surgery and teach higher level orthopedic surgery skills to local surgeons. In the years following, Dr. Harrison and his wife made many trips back, discovering a need for children with orthopedic disabilities.

When his tenure as CEO and President of Kirschner Medical was over, Dr. Harrison created CURE, hoping to meet that need. CURE's first hospital opened in 1998 in Kenya. Today, it is the largest provider of pediatric surgical care in the developing world.
