Organizational Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

The Sustainable Urban Development Researcher internship is for 5 months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

The internship will be located in the following duty stations: Luanda, Bissau, Sao Tome and Praia.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.

General: UN-Habitat is currently present in all Portuguese-speaking countries of the African Country. In these countries, the National Offices already developed or are developing a Habitat Country Programme Document (HCPD) which is going to be the guideline for UN-Habitat activities for the next years and the basic platform for the implementation of the New Urban Agenda at country level.

Under the overall supervision of the Human Settlements Officer stationed in Luanda and under the direct supervision of a Senior Officer stationed in each country, the Sustainable Urban Development Researcher shall carry out the following activities:

  • Familiarize him/herself with the project activities and its partners;
  • Familiarize him/herself with UN-Habitat’s mandate and the Habitat Country Programme Document, by reviewing various publications and relevant documents;
  • Support the Senior Officer in the activities related to the country’s HCPD;
  • Assist in the development of UN-HABITAT urban planning policy documents, guidelines, information materials and presentations through identification and review of relevant publications and documents, drafting and commenting on documents, and assisting in producing information materials;
  • Any other tasks requested by the HSO or the Senior Officer.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN–Habitat) is the United Nations agency for human settlements and sustainable urban development. It was established in 1978 as an outcome of the First UN Conference on Human Settlements and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat I) held in Vancouver, Canada in 1976. UN-Habitat maintains its headquarters at the United Nations Office at Nairobi, Kenya.
