Background

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the UN Resident Coordinator (RC), the staff of the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO) strengthens capacity of the UN Country Team (UNCT), analyzes political, social and economic trends and provides inputs to preparation of country programming products including the Common Country Assessment (CCA) and United Nations Partnership Framework (UNPAF), supports the national strategies setting, provides assistance to development and implementation of the collaborative and joint programmes and monitors progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Global Conferences, provides support to agencies without field representation to access national systems and for national counterparts to access the expertise of agencies without field representation;

Duties and Responsibilities

The intern, under the overall supervision of the Resident Representative/Coordinator and day-to-day supervision by the UNDP Executive Associate to the RC, will undertake the following assignments

  • Assist the UNDP RR/RC office to perform its functions related to supporting the United Nations Development Programme, programming work in Namibia;
  • Support the UNDP RR/RC team with information flow in the office and maintain a follow up matrix on circulation and outstanding files and general correspondence, including electronic filing and administration;
  • Support, when needed, the work of specific UN SDG and UNDP DRR activities including drafting programme related activities;
  • To undertake other assignments as may be decided by the supervisors and in the absence of the Executive Associate to the Resident Representative to man the desk;

Required Skills and Experience

Education

  • Student currently enrolled in a Master, or recently completed a Bachelor or Master in Social Sciences, Development Studies, International Relations, Business Administration, Economics, Management Studies, or related fields.

Experience

  • Sound knowledge in computer skills (eg. website creation), video skills are desirable;
  • Organizing events, communication and office management experience are desirable;

Language Requirements

  • Fluency in English;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language is an asset;

Conditions

  • Any individual hired under these conditions are not staff and therefore, are not covered by UN Staff Regulations and Rules;
  • UNDP internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.

UNDP role in UN coordination

UN coordination is a key priority for UNDP and a commitment in our Strategic Plan. The UNDP Administrator is the Chair of the UN Development Group (UNDG), which unites the funds, programmes, specialized agencies, departments and offices of the UN system that play a role in development. Created by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and endorsed by the General Assembly, the UNDG seeks to ‘facilitate joint policy formulation, encourage programmatic collaboration and realize management efficiencies’ among UN agencies.

At the country level, this interagency structure is embedded in the Resident Coordinator System (RCS), which encompasses all organizations of the United Nations system with operational activities for development. The RCS is managed by UNDP on behalf of the entire system. The Resident Coordinator function is carried by the UNDP Resident Representative. As the designated representative of the Secretary-General, the Resident Coordinator is the leader of the UN Country Team (UNCT) and plays a central role in coordinating the UN’s development operations and ensuring alignment with national priorities. UNDP provides the lion’s share of the resources needed to maintain the RC system in over 130 countries. The remainder of the RCS funding comes from a cost-sharing arrangement between all participating agencies.

UNDP also administers the UN Capital Development Fund, which helps developing countries grow their economies by supplementing existing sources of capital assistance by means of grants and loans; and UN Volunteers, which fields over 6,000 volunteers from 160 countries in support of peace and development through volunteerism worldwide.
