The East African Wild Life Society (EAWLS) is a membership-based NGO that seeks to enhance the conservation and wise use of the environment and natural resources in East Africa for the benefit of current and future generations.

Head of Programmes (HoP)

The Head of Programmes (HoP) will provide strategic leadership and oversight role to the Society’s programmes and Project activities. The HoP being guided by the Society’s Strategic plan, will lead in the development of project proposals for funding and oversee successful implementation of projects.

Working closely with other senior members of staff, led by the Executive Director, the HoP will build, lead and manage an effective, creative and motivated project team.

Duties for the Programme Head Job

  • In conjunction with the Executive Director and the Project Managers, determines project resource requirements;
  • Lead in high quality and robust project proposal development based on situational analysis of the natural resources conservation environment in the East Africa Region
  • Develop a plan for a solid relationship and networks with key donor organizations for consistent support for the society’s conservation programmes;
  • Oversee the delivery/implementation of all programmes and projects, monitoring the delivery in terms of quality, costs and time;
  • Monitors and assists the Project Managers in planning, execution and timely delivery of allocated projects, ensuring incorporation of best practice project management processes;
  • Works closely with the Project Managers to identify potential project cost overruns, time delays or quality deficiencies, and implements actions for rectification;
  • Analyses project results, and interprets results into recommendations for management to assist them in the development of the organization as a voice of conservation in East Africa Region;
  • Ensures that clear communication and good relationships are developed and maintained within the Programme unit, with the Executive Director, with other internal departments and with external parties such as the donors, Government, CSO, etc.
  • Plans, develops, coordinates, communicates and ensure implementation of the internal policies and procedures of the Programme Unit
  • Provide support and guidance to the EAWLS working groups/Forums
  • Effectively and efficiently delegates responsibility and authority, and ensures accountability, to subordinate staff for the delivery of agreed outputs;
  • Develops and deploys standard project management tools (such as monitoring & evaluation framework, project design & implementation plans, logical frameworks) and develops the project management and technical skills of the Project Managers and other project staff;
  • Provides timely and accurate project tracking, monitoring, evaluation, analysis of outputs, and reporting both internally and externally
  • Establishes performance objectives, with appropriate measures for all projects and project staff;
  • Prepares, and submits for approval, revenue and expenditure forecasts based on established financial goals;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director incorporation to above.

Essential Experience

  • Experience in working with the private sector, donors, non-governmental organizations, community-based organizations, as well as public sector; and demonstrated ability to grow an existing business, maintain existing client relationships and develop new ones
  • Proven experience in the total financial management of a large and diverse multi-disciplinary project portfolio.
  • Excellent financial and situational analytical skills and knowledge of analysis techniques;
  • Excellent organizational and decision-making skills. Strong skills in facilitation management, team leadership, planning and problem solving. Ability to understand the total impact of projects on the entire organization with a holistic perspective (holistic skills).

Programme Head Job Qualification

  • A degree in Natural Management (NRM), preferably at Masters level;
  • Over 8 years’ experience in NRM / Conservation and at least 5 years in Programme management level;
  • Advocacy, fundraising and negotiation skills
  • Good technical writing, excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent computer skills in various computer packages
  • Good organizational and analytical skills;
  • Ability to work under pressure and to meet deadline;
  • Strong networking and partnership building skills

Head of Communications

The Head of Communications, Fundraising & Advocacy will provide leadership and strategic direction of the Society’s communications, public relations, membership, fundraising and advocacy activities.

He/She will lead in the development and oversee the implementation of a communications and development (Fundraising & Advocacy) strategies, aimed at supporting the Society’s goals, strengthening its membership relations and boosting its fundraising and advocacy efforts towards fulfilling its mission.

Working closely as part of the senior management team, led by the Executive Director, He/She will build, lead and manage an effective and creative Communications, Fundraising and Advocacy Departmental team. This team will be responsible for closely liaising with and growing the Society’s advocacy voice, membership, and communicating to the general public, government and other local and international stakeholders about the work of the Society.

Duties for the Communication Job

  • Communications – Transforming EAWLS public visibility and strengthen the profile by building on and substantially enhancing its existing internal and external communications to our target audiences such that the public, the government, EAWLS members and the international community are inspired and enrolled in EAWLS work and mission.
  • Fundraising – shape, manage and drive the implementation of a successful fundraising strategy to support organizational and project development needs, widen the opportunity to secure funds through a broader approach to fundraising, including targeting grant making trusts, corporates and foundations.
  • Advocacy- Spearhead the development and execution of advocacy strategy, ensuring that it is firmly grounded on evidence and a good analysis of our advocacy targets in Kenya and the region while effectively engaging our members, stakeholders and the media.
  • Membership – Grow and diversify the Society’s membership in a strategic manner, while also strengthening the provision of a range of popular value-add membership services and benefits.
  • Marketing- Provide overall leadership in the growth, diversification and marketing of Society’s merchandizes and advertisement space in the Swara publication
  • Website/Social media – Oversee, develop and manage all digital media for the Society, including its website, publications, videos and a strategy for social media engagement.
  • Swara – Ensure timely publication of high quality Swara Magazine and Facilitate establishment of an endowment fund with sufficient income to cover the production costs of Swara and the implementation of EAWLS advocacy work.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director and the Senior Management Team to ensure that the Society works and delivers impact in a manner that enables it to communicate its work in a strikingly relevant, rich and captivating manner.
  • Support and facilitate the meetings of the communications, Swara and Fundraising sub-committees of the Board
  • Any other duties as may be granted by the Management

Communication Job Qualifications

  • BSc/BA and/or MSc/MA in a relevant field from a reputable University
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience nationally and regionally, covering as much as possible the duties and responsibilities outlined above
  • Experience in developing and transforming the visibility of an organization.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including proposal writing, report writing and delivering presentations
  • Experience in all aspects of fundraising, from developing and managing strategies, plans, budgets and administrative systems
  • A good understanding of advocacy with regards to conservation/ environmental issues
  • Strong team leadership, people management, interpersonal and networking skills
  • Ability to convey the Society’s work with confidence and credibility
  • Being strategic and creative, being results-driven, and having positive personal and organisational relationships and being a team player able to lead as well as support others

The East African Wild Life Society (EAWLS) came into being in 1961 through a merger of the Kenya and Tanzania Wildlife Societies (both formed in 1956) and wildlife enthusiasts from Uganda. EAWLS was originally registered as a Society and later as a non–governmental organization (NGO) in Kenya under the NGO Act of 1990.
