Job Purpose/Objective

Working under the guidance and supervision of the Senior Laboratory Technologist, the Laboratory Technologist will be directly responsible for;

Program management:

  • Perform Laboratory investigations as per clinician’s request and ensure accurate, reliable and timely results.
  • Maintain order and smooth flow of patients.
  • Supervise the Kenyan and refugee incentive staff.
  • Participate in in-service training and regular on bench refresher courses for Kenyan and refugee staff.
  • Ensure that all relevant records are updated and maintained.
  • Monitor and supervise proper usage of laboratory reagents.
  • Maintain Laboratory machines in good order- cleaning and covering after use.
  • Ensure general laboratory cleanliness is maintained.
  • Report any unusual statistics or observations to the laboratory in-charge.
  • Ensure SOP’S are used at all times.
  • Ensuring safety procedures in the laboratory are maintained.
  • Preparing of stains, reagents and solutions necessary for all lab tests.
  • Participate in the department planning and forecasting of laboratory supplies.

Operations

  • Ensure that all statistical reports are accurate and submitted weekly, monthly, quarterly and annually as necessary.
  • Maintain an updated record and compile and submit monthly inventory reports of all laboratory assets and equipment.
  • Review, authorize and keep accurate records of all requisitions, duty rosters and applications for leave.
  • Monitor and ensure the proper usage of program supplies.
  • Participate in annual program planning process and budget implementation. Recommend budget revisions to focus on priority areas and assist with rising of fresh bulk supplies orders every trimester.
  • Ensure proper collection, packaging and transportation of laboratory samples to Nairobi hospital and/or other outsourced centre.
  • Supervise the storage of laboratory reagents and cold chain system to avoid compromised reagents that may lead to false reporting.
  • Preparation of culture media and ensuring that they are fit for purpose
  • He/she will head a microbiology bench
  • He/ She will be responsible for Microbiology inventory management and ensuring Pr is raised on time.
  • Doing culture and sensitivity to various samples
  • serotyping all organism isolated
  • Microbiology waste management; ensure used culture media are sterilized before disposal
  • Investigate food poisoning and disease of public health concern eg cholera
  • Packing and shipping of isolates to CDC lab

Human Resource Management

  • Monitoring and supervision of the laboratory incentive staff; to ensure that work is done properly and efficiently.
  • Routinely monitor incentive staff performance according to their job description.
  • With the HR field office review personnel issues and concerns of incentive laboratory staff and assist with determining and implementing solutions
  • Conduct regular training sessions (OJT and refresher trainings) for refugee staff.

Communication and Reporting

  • Ensure all laboratory reports are done on time and sent to HIS, CSM and other offices as may be indicated.
  • Notify your supervisor and CSM on all investigations above the positive threshold.
  • Report any laboratory incidents to the senior lab technologist.

Key Result Areas:

  • Quality of lab services- reliable and timely.
  • Cleaning and orderliness of the work place
  • FIFO and FEFO application in stock management
  • Training of lab assistants course and other CME
  • Timely reporting

Required Qualifications

  • Diploma in medical laboratory sciences.
  • MUST be registered by KMLTTB

Required Experience & Competencies:

  • At least 2 years experience working in a busy Microbiology laboratory
  • Computer literate
  • Team player and cultural sensitivity is required.
  • Ability to work in hardship areas (Previous experience in a Camp setting will be an added advantage).
  • Fluency in Turkana/Somali will be an added advantage
  • Female candidates are encouraged to apply.

Since October 2012, the IRC has been responding to humanitarian needs of Nigerians. The IRC initially intervened in response to floods that affected over 7 million people across the country, destroying harvest and damaging homes. The IRC is currently implementing programs in Health, Protection, WASH, Nutrition, Food Security, and Women’s Protection and Empowerment (WPE) in Adamawa and Borno States in North-Eastern Nigeria.

The IRC is dedicated to making women and adolescent girls healthier from the earliest phase of acute crises (a target group most vulnerable during crisis) and implements evidence-based reproductive health interventions in line with the SPHERE-standard Minimum Initial Service Package for Reproductive Health in Crises (MISP). The goal is to ensure that the IRC’s health responses in emergencies include the core package of Reproductive Health (RH) services in its interventions.

The IRC’s Reproductive Health (RH) program is currently implementing (MISP) for RH in 4 health care centers in MMC and Jere LGAs and 1 IDP camp clinic. In addition the program is starting up an emergency mobile programming outside of these areas of Maiduguri in coordination with the WPE team. The focus of this program is to provide quality comprehensive RH and WPE services to conflict-affected women and girls in a timely manner. In addition to the mobile program, the WPE and RH joint mobile teams will be in charge of rapid assessments and rapid response. The mobile teams will be focused in the newly opened LGAs and emergency areas previously inaccessible due to conflict and insecurity. These teams will provide life-saving services to populations outside of Maiduguri, who have not had access to services in approximately 3 years.
