Médecins Sans Frontières, also known as Doctors Without Borders, is an international humanitarian non-governmental organization best known for its projects in war-torn regions and developing countries affected by endemic diseases.

Medecins Sans Frontieres Belgium is looking to fill the following positions on fixed term (extendable) contract for our Kenya mission, based in Embu County.

Job Title: Project Coordinator

The successful candidate will be reporting to the Project Coordinator (PC) and s/he will perform the following tasks, among others:-

  • Support the PC and the PMR in assessing and implementing the NCD project strategy
    Be the focal contact person with the relevant counterparts in Embu county
    Supervise the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the mentoring programme
    Active participation in the project planning, budgeting and reporting

Qualifications for the Project Coordinator Job

  • Education: Registered Clinical Officer or Nurse with a Diploma in Clinical Medicine & Surgery or Nursing
  • Experience: Minimum working experience of 2 years in a primary health care setting within MSF as a supervisor, activity manager or coordinator; experience in management of NCDs is an asset; good knowledge of the Kenyan devolution system.
  • Skills/ Competences: Flexible; diplomatic; cultural sensitive; confident; result oriented; proactive; attentive to details; organized; team player; excellent communication, analytical & reporting skills; computer literate
  • Language: Proficiency in written and oral English & Swahili.

Job Title: Nurse 

The successful candidate will be reporting to the NCD Activity Manager and s/he will perform the following tasks, among others:

  • Support the NCD Activity Manager in setting up the mentorship programme
  • Mentor nurses on the management of NCDs
  • Ensure medical & nursing consultations for patients in accordance with MSF protocols
  • Data management and reporting on NCDs activities in the MSF supported health facilities

Qualifications for the Nurse Job

  • Education: Registered Nurse with a Diploma in Nursing
  • Experience: Minimum working experience of 3 years in a primary health care setting; experience in management of NCDs is an asset; Knowledge in mentoring and MSF/ INGO experience is an added advantage
  • Skills/ Competences: Flexible; diplomatic; cultural sensitive; result oriented; attentive to details; organized; team player; good communication & reporting skills; stress management; computer literate
  • Language: Proficiency in written and oral English & Swahili.

Job Title: Clinical Officer – 4 positions

The successful candidate will be reporting to the NCD Activity Manager and s/he will perform the following tasks, among others:-

  • Support the NCD Activity Manager in setting up the mentorship programme
  • Mentor clinical officers on the management of NCDs
  • Ensure medical consultations for patients is provided in accordance with MSF protocols
  • Data management and reporting on NCDs activities in the MSF supported health facilities

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) was founded in 1971 in France by a group of doctors and journalists in the wake of war and famine in Biafra. Their aim was to establish an independent organisation that focuses on delivering emergency medicine aid quickly, effectively and impartially.

Doctors Without Borders

Three hundred volunteers made up the organisation when it was founded: doctors, nurses and other staff, including the 13 founding doctors and journalists.

MSF was created in the belief that all people should have access to healthcare regardless of gender, race, religion, creed or political affiliation, and that people’s medical needs outweigh respect for national boundaries. MSF’s principles of action are described in our charter, which established a framework for our activities.

MSF's first missions

MSF’s first mission was to the Nicaraguan capital, Managua, in 1972, after an earthquake destroyed most of the city and killed between 10,000 and 30,000 people.

In 1974, MSF set up a relief mission to help the people of Honduras after Hurricane Fifi caused major flooding and killed thousands of people.

In 1975, MSF established its first large-scale medical programme during a refugee crisis, providing medical care for the waves of Cambodians seeking sanctuary from Pol Pot’s oppressive rule.

In these first missions, the weaknesses of MSF as a new humanitarian organisation became readily apparent: preparation was lacking, doctors were left unsupported and supply chains were tangled.
