Job Description

This electrical engineering role is to support client projects from inception through to commissioning and final completion. Aspects of the work include advisory and working from a client project brief to engineer electrical solutions compliant with international and client-specific standards. Typical projects will include working from a client brief to produce tender specifications, designs and drawings for new or renovated mini-grids, micro-grids, electrification, 11kV switchgear networks and connections with HV cable connections, transformers, diesel generators, load banks, LV interfaces, SCADA interfaces and protection schemes with a mixture of electro-mechanical and numerical relays. The design will take account of ground conditions, existing building layouts and include multicore cabling and earthing. A proven track-record working on similar project is essential

Testing and commissioning experience would also be beneficial but not essential. Work may also involve carrying out surveys of existing installations and preparing reports proposing, with justifications, the degree of upgrade or replacement required developing implementation options and preparing staged work plans and installation method statements etc. To support these projects the role will of necessity be a mixture of office and site based works requiring travel within Africa but based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The engineer must be capable of working independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team. Regular customer/client contact features in this role, as does report-writing. The engineer must be confident and capable of presenting the design to the client at meetings and through presentations and must be capable of producing clear and concise engineering documents. Opportunities may become available for the selected candidate to work on other future projects including transmission-level substation design and renewable connections works at home and overseas.

Candidate Specification

In order to qualify as an applicant for this role, you will meet the following criteria: – Previous demonstrable experience with Electrical project engineering, with focus on installations from LV up to 11kV / 33kV /66kV (and possibly 132kV) covering design, specification, installation, test witnessing and commissioning support of switchgear, HV cables, transformers, earthing systems and associated control and protection schemes including pilot and multicore cabling.

Be educated to BEng level in Electrical Engineering (or offer an equivalent and relevant qualification together with relevant experience). A registered professional engineer or Chartered Engineer is preferred. – Experience in working closely and constructively with Clients and Colleagues as well as the ability to work alone on projects if the occasion should arise. – Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential as the role will require preparation of specifications and reports and direct contact with clients at management level meetings, with suppliers, contractors as well as other staff
