The Gambia is a small country with a population of 1,882,450, surrounded by Senegal to the North, East and South and the Atlantic Ocean to the West. UNICEF works in The Gambia on a number of children’s rights issues including addressing harmful traditional practices, the right to quality education, maternal and child health, immunization and WASH amongst other programming priorities.
Reporting to the Deputy Representative, the Protection and Inclusion of Children (PIC) section covers the three areas of child protection, education and social protection, where the programming model, as described in the 2017-2021 Country Programme Document, combines three programming areas where there is significant convergence where excluded children from formal education are often those most at risk from violence and traditional harmful practices. The PIC section, as such, is unique to UNICEF The Gambia and aims to ensure strong programming harmonization in a small office with multiple programming challenges.
