Regional Media & Communications Advisor – HECA at Oxfam 152 views0 applications

Oxfam is currently undergoing a period of transformational change, which envisions a future where Oxfam is a more interdependent network, driven by knowledge, organized for internal simplicity and globally balanced. Oxfam strives to have affiliates in southern countries that can raise their own funds, run their own programs, make their own alliances with local people’s movements, and lobby their own governments and businesses.

The Horn, East & Central Africa Region (HECA) is one of the largest regions where Oxfam works. All ten countries in the region are currently affected by natural and/or man-made humanitarian crises, and this is having an impact on Oxfam’s role in the region. In addition to country specific Oxfam strategies in each of the 10 countries for the period 2015-2019, Oxfam also has a statement of strategic intent for the region, reflecting the key strategic priorities and objectives for the entire region. They include prevention and response to humanitarian crises; enabling women in HECA to claim their social, economic and political rights; supporting the development of civil society, and the improvement of accountable, democratic governance; and supporting the improved resilience of those with vulnerable livelihoods to climate change, insecurity and other risks. The HECA region also hosts the Pan-Africa Programme.

TEAM PURPOSE/BACKGROUND

  • To profile Oxfam’s work in national, regional and global media and in wider communications to support Oxfam’s public engagement including fundraising and campaign goals.
  • To work with national and affiliate press officers in the region (DRC, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Sudan, South Sudan, Burundi, Rwanda, Somalia and Uganda) to deliver high-quality media projects and compelling story-gathering materials for national, regional and global media markets, and wider social media and communications needs.
  • To act as a conduit between national and global media colleagues to ensure that messages and quality are consistent, and to identify opportunities for collaboration.
  • To provide strategic media, communications and social media advice to senior-level staff at regional and country level on a day-to-day basis in the development of plans, matters of brand risk and to maximise communications impact
  • To lead or support Oxfam’s global media and communications response to a Cat 1 or Cat 2 humanitarian crisis response, under the management of the nominated Lead Media Affiliate.
  • To ensure the regional and country teams consistently implement the global Oxfam brand guidelines and related global corporate tools.
  • To coordinate between country teams and affiliates, Oxfam International or specific functional teams to enable access and provide support to the country program for content gathering (e.g. trips), for media, fundraising, marketing, campaigning and other forms of public engagement.

Contract Length: Fixed term contract for 2 years.

Location: Preferred location Nairobi, Kenya  or Country in Horn, East and Central Africa region

Oxfam is a global movement of millions of people who share the belief that, in a world rich in resources, poverty isn't inevitable. In just 15 years, extreme poverty has been halved. 15 more years and we can end it for good.

To spread that change and make it last, political solutions are also needed to tackle the root causes of poverty and create societies where empowered individuals can thrive. We will always act, we will speak out, and we won't live with poverty.

Where we work

Together with our local partners, we work in more than 90 countries as part of the Oxfam International confederation, to tackle the root causes of poverty and respond to emergencies.

Oxfam is a movement of millions of people, all working towards one goal - an end to poverty for everyone.

We can take on the big issues that keep people poor - like inequality, hunger and climate change - if we each play our part, however small it may feel.
