Project Summary:

The Reading for Success – National Program for Reading activity implemented by Creative Associates International and funded by USAID supports the Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training (MNEVT) to improve reading and writing outcomes at the primary school level (grades 1-4). The activity will be carried out in partnership with the MNEVT to build their capacity to develop effective Arabic language curriculum and instructional materials and to deliver professional development programs to education personnel to improve teaching skills and better monitor student progress.

Position Summary:

The Senior Reading Specialist provides overall technical oversight and guidance to the project’s support to improved reading instruction.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead the work of the Early Grade Team to design teaching and learning materials—including textbook, teacher guide and supplementary materials–for early grade reading in Arabic for Grades 1-4 students to improve early grade student reading competencies.
  • Guide the development of continuous professional development and coaching modules, materials and training on reading instruction in Arabic for Grades 1-4, based on best practices, for use by MNEVT and Moroccan civil society organizations.
  • Work closely with the Monitoring and Evaluation team to conduct an Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA).
  • Work closely with the Enrichment Program team on the development of extracurricular interventions to support reading achievement.
  • Supervise Early Grade Reading Team and coordinate technical assistance from expert reading consultants.

Reporting & Supervision:

This position reports to the Program Manager and supervises technical staff members.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Doctorate Degree in Early Grade Reading or a related field, with 4 years of experience working in education, or a Master’s Degree with a minimum of 8 years of experience.
  • In depth knowledge in the teaching of reading in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA).
  • Familiarity with USAID tools or other international organizations and methodologies to
  • improve education outcomes.
  • Understanding of the development and education issues in Morocco.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English and Modern Standard Arabic.
  • Fluency in French is desired.
