Afrika Tikkun is an international nonprofit organisation that provides education, health and social services to children, youth and their families through centres of excellence in South African Townships. Its aim is to empower communities to develop new generations of productive citizens.

Afrika Tikkun seeks to appoint a Social Worker, based in Wings of Life Centre, Diepsloot.

Reporting to: General Manager

The Social Worker will provide comprehensive social services and support to needy children within the community, and to manage the caregivers within the project.

Responsibilities:

Counselling

  • Communicating to the clients in their own preferred language
  • Help clients make informed decision

Capacity Building

  • Continuous assessment of NGO’s for capacity building
  • Conduct workshops
  • Coordinate capacity building exercises
  • Market the services of the unit
  • Training and development and performance assessment of human resources in unit

Legislation and Policies

  • Ensure that programmes are in line with legislation and policy
  • Tracing of patients
  • Investigating into home circumstances, preparing reports and compiling of report on the home visits
  • Involving of lay counsellors in tracking down lost to follow up patients

Management Functions

  • Trends Analysis and assessment through progress reporting
  • Management of information systems to ensure effectiveness of existing controls (Soweto care system and checklist)
  • Compile complex reports like joint operations committee/steering committee
  • Support the General Manager

General Functions

  • Provide counselling and therapy to CHH (Child Headed Households) and OVC (Orphans and Vulnerable Children)
  • Provide on-going psychological support to the children
  • Network with similar NGO’s, service providers and social workers to ensure effective interventions
  • Remain informed of current training and relevant information

Requirements:

  • Competent, self-motivated, honest, display integrity, friendly
  • Communication – Clearly conveying information and ideas; ensuring understanding. Comprehending communication from others. Effective verbal and written communication ability
  • Initiative – Making active attempts to influence events to achieve goals; self-starting rather than accepting passively; taking action to achieve goals beyond what is required; being proactive
  • Flexibility – Ability to adapt to changing circumstances where required
  • Ability to work under pressure, multi task, prioritise workload and meet deadlines
  • An assertive, diplomatic personality
  • Ability to work independently and be accountable
  • Attention to detail – Ensuring that work is completed with great care and that every detail is taken care of timeously
  • Grade 12 – Senior Certificate or Relevant Certificate
  • BA Social Work
  • Three years required in social work after registration as a Social Worker with the South African Council for Social Services Professions
  • Extensive experience in community development and working with Non-Governmental organisations
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Knowledge of new social welfare paradigm, Policies, Legislation and Regulations of Social Development Services in the department of Social Development in partnership with NGO’s, CBO’s and FBO’s
  • Computer Literate
  • Report writing skills
