WUSC is a Canadian non-profit organization dedicated to improving education, employment, and empowerment opportunities for marginalized youth around the world. We work with a unique and powerful network of post-secondary institutions, private-sector partners and volunteers to create a world where all young people can grow up in safe, secure and supportive environments, where they can learn, work and play a vital role in their country’s development. WUSC has been active in Ghana since 1997, contributing to national development goals through partnerships with the government of Ghana, civil society, the private sector, and other key development actors. Through exemplary programs, WUSC has gained significant expertise contributing to institutional strengthening, empowering communities, providing safe school environments, improving educational systems, and ensuring equitable access to education for both girls and boys.

Transforming Teacher Education and Learning (T-TEL) Ghana is a four year Government of Ghana Programme (2014 — 2018) to support the implementation of the new policy framework for Pre-Tertiary Teacher Professional Development and Management.

T-TEL seeks to transform the delivery of pre-service teacher education in Ghana by improving the quality of teaching and learning through support to relevant national bodies and institutions and all 40 Colleges of Education (CoEs). This programme is being managed by Cambridge Education in association with the Open University UK and World University Service of Canada (WUSC).

Elements of the programme will include:

  • professional development for all CoE tutors (including tutors in mathematics, English and science);
  • support for the leadership and management of CoEs and training of their leadership and management teams;
  • support to reform the Diploma in Basic Education (DBE) curriculum;
  • support to develop more effective student practicums;
  • work with MoE and regulatory bodies on the implementation of existing policies for teacher education;
  • a Challenge Fund to which CoEs and their partner districts and schools will be able to apply to carry out innovative initiatives; and
  • a set of incentives for each CoE to improve their management and training delivery.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide technical input into the design of a training and coaching program for CoE tutors, and managers, and district education officials;
  • Support the implementation of the training and coaching program, including the creation and training of regional coaching teams;
  • Provide technical input to the design and coaching of school-based mentors for teacher trainees and district education officials;
  • Facilitate the training of mentors to better support students during practicums;
  • Assist key advisors, coaches and consultants to develop and implement activities in the project work plans;
  • Support the development of materials as required and appropriate; and
  • Draft reports as required by the host organization and WUSC.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree in education, or other relevant field
  • Experience in teacher training and professional development
  • Experience in managing teams and managing the delivery of multiple program activities
  • Experience working in a developing country would be an asset
  • Ability to build and maintain working relationships that foster teamwork and collaboration
  • Experience working in a cross cultural environment
  • Ability to provide leadership and promote communication within the team
  • Ability to efficiently use resources
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision
  • Experience in mentoring and coaching (desirable)
  • Knowledge of the education system in Ghana (desirable)
  • Knowledge and experience working in the pre-service teaching training context (desirable)

VOLUNTEER BENEFITS AND SUPPORT:

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Applicants must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada between the age of 18-70.

  • With the support of the program, all volunteers shall undertake to make a minimum financial contribution of $1,500 for participating in the program.
