Background and context
Feed the Children (‘FEED’) is a child focused organization whose efforts are aligned towards creating a world where no child goes to bed hungry. This bold vision is driven by Community based sector innovating solutions in the fields of Food &Nutrition, Health &Water, Education and Livelihoods with the aim of defeating the status quo of childhood hunger. Using the Community Focused Child Development approach (CFCD), FEED strives to build synergy around partnerships in the fight for change in the lives of children. In Africa, ‘FEED’s presence is in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Malawi.
Over the years FEED has been implementing Education projects in Kajiado, Samburu, urban slums of Nairobi and Turkana Counties. FEED has been contributing to financial access through the village savings and loans associations’ project that has been implemented since 2014. The group members have managed to save and borrow over the last 3 years and have invested in various IGAs’ enabling them to meet their daily needs at household level.
However, there is need to build the capacity of the VSLa members on financial inclusion/literacy. This is because with their limited resources the members have a challenge in proper budgeting, savings and spending. Careful management of what little money they do have is critical to meet day-to-day needs, cope with unexpected emergencies, and take advantage of opportunities when they come along. The project goal is to increase income at household level for improved livelihoods. The training will therefore contribute in equipping the staff with knowledge and skills which will be cascaded to VSLa members making them better money managers.
- Purpose and Objectives
The purpose of the assignment is to:-
- Equip FEED staff with technical knowledge and facilitation skills on financial inclusion/literacy.
The specific objectives of the assignment are:
The training will seek to achieve the following specific objectives:
- To build the knowledge of FEED staff on financial inclusion/literacy including current trends in Kenya.
- To equip trainees with practical facilitation skills on financial inclusion/literacy
- To provide trainees with skills and tools for measuring financial access and their indicators.
- Developing financial capabilities to the rural and peri urban economy/households as a strategy to economic empowerment.
- Tasks for the assignment
In order to achieve the above broad and specific objectives, the following tasks are expected to be undertaken by the financial inclusion facilitators:
- Prepare the training content, presentations, pre and post training tests and reference materials
- Develop the workshop schedule
- Develop a training guide or a revised curriculum targeting Feed the Children staff
- Develop training material for use in the learning sessions
- Facilitate the workshop with practical sessions
- Draft a training report for the training documenting the process, content, conclusions, recommendations and post-training action plans.
- Facilitate follow-up during the implementation of the financial inclusion/literacy work plan to support on emerging challenges
- Deliverables
The expected outcomes of the assignment:
- Appropriate presentations and reference materials developed and delivered to Feed the Children.
- At least 20 Feed the Children staff have been equipped with technical knowledge and facilitation skills of the financial inclusion/literacy. This will be validated by the pre and post-training tests.
- Post-training action plans are adopted by the project team and other concerned stakeholders.
- An after training report with recommendations for follow up.
- Methodology
The training methodology that will be employed by the consultant:
- Interactive plenary and group activities.
- Frontal presentations.
- Brainstorming sessions/group discussions
- Case studies and documentaries.
- Timeframe
The consultancy is planned to cover 7 days (4 days for actual training and 3 days for reporting). The training days will be on 24th to 27th October 2017.
- Budget and costing
Feed the Children will provide administrative support which includes
- Training venue for the entire training period
- Training materials (note books, flip charts, projector, pens, marker pens )
- Lunch and snacks for participants and facilitators
- The facilitator to indicate the cost for the training
