Description of internship project:

We accelerate innovation across five platforms—vaccines, drugs, diagnostics, devices, and system and service innovations—that harness our entrepreneurial insight, scientific and public health expertise, and passion for health equity. By mobilizing partners around the world, we take innovation to scale, working alongside countries primarily in Africa and Asia to tackle their greatest health needs. The accounting and finance internship is designed to provide practical work experience in accounting program support. The intern will be involved in a variety of administrative and accounting tasks related to the day-to-day operation of the NGO.

Internship goals and learning objectives/benefit to the intern:

The student will learn about and develop a better understanding around:

  • Finance processes in the NGO environment
  • Practice of an integrated system (ERP)
  • Finance related administrative tasks such as office organization, filing systems, program/customer support, interactions with third party partners and application of technology (including Word, Excel, Outlook, ERP).
  • Intern will gain exposure to finance/accounting-related program support activities and processes for an international NGO

Skills to be developed and/or expanded during internship:  

  • NGO finance culture;
  • Use of Accounting software
  • Meeting facilitation

Proposed activities:  

As a finance assistant, the intern will:

  • Enter invoices through the system
  • Prepare payment following Accounts Payables process and procedure
  • Prepare field office payment vouchers and expense reports with appropriate documentation of all transactions for the office
  • Scan and archive Financial report documents
  • Ensure that all office accounts (i.e. telephone, internet, building services, office rent, taxes and vendors) are paid in an appropriate and timely manner
  • Prepare payroll taxes and any other taxes

Learning outcomes (how the Intern’s performance will be evaluated):  

With consistent mentorship and direction provided during the internship, the intern’s performance will be evaluated based on:

  • Regular weekly meetings and feedback from internship supervisor to evaluate progress and completion of internship activities
  • Ability to coordinate/contribute to teams’ accounting needs
  • Effective participation and collaboration with the team

Required skills and experience:

  • Prior experience of at least 2 years in an accounting department
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office
  • Fluency in French and English
  • Ability to work autonomously
  • Ability to use multimedia software programs and integrated systems (ERP)
