Created in 1979, our Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) – Action Against Hunger – is fighting against hunger in the world. Its mission is to save lives eradicating hunger through the prevention, detection, and treatment of malnutrition, in particular during and after emergencies caused by conflicts and natural disasters.

In Sierra Leone since 1991, and extended its presence and operations to Moyamba in 2009. Action Against Hunger currently has programmes in the following thematic areas: Health and Nutrition, Food Security and Livelihood, WASH and integrated programmes related advocacy. Our presence is in thirty-two communities in Western Area and in four Chiefdoms in Moyamba (Kori, Bumpeh, Kamajei and Upper Banta Chiefdoms).

Currently, Action Against Hunger is working in Liberia intervening in Nutrition and Health systems strengthening in collaboration with the Nutrition Division of Ministry of Health, is a part of strong voice in leading Nutrition Advocacy at national level to scale up nutrition in Liberia.

Action Against Hunger is recruiting its new Advocacy and Communication expert to develop and implement its mission advocacy strategy consistent with the regional and international advocacy issues pursued by Action Against Hunger in order to promote the technical and operational strategy and increase AAH impact by creating political and institutional changes at national level.

As part of the Senior team management, you will provide technical guidance and direction to the mission team on the communications and advocacy strategy implementation at mission level, ensuring Action Against hunger work is effectively communicated with AAH network and with the relevant stakeholders.

You should be able to identify, develop and coordinate partnership with other partners on communications and advocacy activities (NGO, civil society) and facilitating joint advocacy activities.

You will be responsible to create communication products about Action Against Hunger Sierra Leone programs in local languages as well as English for wider dissemination: 1 brochure per program; an overview of Action Against Hunger work in country (annual); review case studies provided by field team to include in program reporting. Prepare the mission’s regular newsletters, flyers and brochures that communicate the mission’s progressive achievements.

You will be analysing the situation on communications and advocacy issues: collect and update the data, follow political, financial, administrative, national or international dates, follow the positioning of all parties and their changes.

You will coordinate with the program coordinators and managers on the program related media engagement.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree or master degree on mass communication, strategic communication, international relations/affairs, social sciences, political science, development studies, or similar field.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in communication and advocacy filed. Experience in other fields than advocacy will be examined in the face of exposure to high-level stakeholders (government, UN agencies, NGOs – at national level).
  • Experience in using grant management, using M&E information for advocacy, campaign and dialogues with partners and governments.
  • Demonstrated working experience in policy analysis, data collection, analysis and interpretation (both qualitative and quantitative data) writing and production of reports, policy briefs and publications.
  • Knowledge of AAH operations, policies and procedures is an asset.

  • English fluency is compulsory

  • Autonomous and result oriented
  • Strong negotiation skills and capacity to promote consortiums and partnerships
  • Excellent attention to detail, highly organized, rigorous, self-motivated, strong sense of responsibility, ability to work independently
