PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The CASCADE programme goal is to improve food security and contribute to the reduction of malnutrition of at least 5 million women of reproductive age and children under 5 in Benin, Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and Mozambique. The consortium is comprised of CARE International and GAIN, two organisations that have extensive experience in tackling malnutrition in the programme countries at multiple levels. The programme has two strategic objectives: it aims to increase access to and consumption of healthy diets, as well as increasing the resilience of households to economic and climate change-related shocks across the six countries, with a focus on women of reproductive age and children. The programme will galvanise government, business, and communities around 5 domains: 1) Policy change and accountability; 2) Re-engineering markets and mobilising private sector; 3) Transforming cultural norms and practices; 4) Taking a gender transformative approach; 5) Systematising data and learning for policy. In Kenya, the programme will focus on the counties of Nakuru, Nyandarua and Nairobi, aligning with GAIN’s A1 programming areas. CASCADE will build on successful projects in Nyandarua by CARE which have successfully implemented FFBSs that integrated gender-transformative interventions.

JOB SUMMARY

The purpose of the job is to strengthen CARE’S communications and advocacy work and its ability to engage with and influence global and national policy processes around food and nutrition security through dealing with matters of public information for online and offline audiences to enhance the visibility of CASCADE including drafting, interpretation, dissemination and implementation of a creative approach to major communications and media initiatives in accordance with the overall objectives of CASCADE.

ROLES AND RESPOSIBILITIES

RESPONSIBILITY 1: Lead CASCADE’s Advocacy and Communication’s function -40%

  • With support from the Project Manager develop and implement the Advocacy & Communication strategy for the CASCADE Project
  • Ensure project and partner staff are aware of and buy-in to the messaging matrix & branding guidelines
  • Ensure that high quality and influential project materials and media products are developed and widely disseminated
  • Support project in the delivery of high-profile events that are effective in communicating key messages and leveraging societal change
  • Lead the process of identifying advocacy & communications needs (especially understanding the extent to which stakeholder mindset change is necessary before change can occur)
  • Develop innovative approaches for influencing
  • Jointly with MEAL Coordinator develop results measurement and management framework for Advocacy & Communication activities

RESPONSIBILITY 2: Supporting Reporting and Learning on CASCADE- 35%

  • Manage the website Pages’ content based on CASCADE requirements Support in the development of annual workplans, and detailed implementation and monitoring plans.
  • Contribute sections on Advocacy & Communications activities to Donor reports; ensuring that ‘value for money’ is communicated
  • Liaise with press & media to represent CASCADE publications and materials
  • Serve as the focal point for all communications for the CASCADE project by liaising with stakeholders, county departments, and with other government units, departments and ministries as needed

RESPONSIBILTY 3: Linkage and networking with other collaborators – 20%

  • Build information networks, oversee maintenance of publicly accessible information materials on the CASCADE plans, and develop outreach activities
  • Develops strategic partnerships with key stakeholders and media alliances in the country to enhance visibility and maintain an up-to-date database of the relevant press
  • Establish and maintain a good working relationship with other CARE colleagues and project staff, project Partner, County government, MOA, collaborators, other stakeholders and enhance CARE image.
  • Liaise with the Relevant County government officials, collaborators, and other stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Enhance teamwork and synergy in programming and CAREs activities.

Other Responsibilities as assigned -5%

Keep up to date with CARE’s emerging strategies and approaches and contribute proactively towards implementation. Take responsibility for ensuring personal safety and security, giving due care and consideration to the impact of personal decisions on the safety and security of others

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Training

Mandatory

• Degree in communication, Journalism and other relevant field.

Experience and Competencies Required

  • Minimum of 3 years work experience in media and communications with experience in engaging decision-makers across Kenya and beyond.
  • Demonstrate professional competence and mastery of subject matter.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement effective communication strategies to achieve advocacy goals.
  • Ability to help achieve breakthroughs in political leadership, policy and practice.
  • Be conversant with developing news stories and in shaping multimedia products.
  • Ability to operate in a multilateral environment and work with broader coalitions, including engaging
  • women’s, youth other civil society movements and the private sector.
  • Ability to conceptualize, design and implement major information campaigns.
  • Knowledge on gender and human right issues.
  • Communication, presentation, networking, and advocacy skills.
  • knowledge of social media platforms and experience in social media outreach.
  • Knowledge of local media landscape.
  • Understanding of development/relief issues
