Oxygen Program

Treatment for those experiencing acute respiratory distress requires oxygen therapy to support breathing. In the context of COVID-19, published data on the literature is all in agreement that COVID-19 patients require hospitalization, particularly those severe and critical cases, almost all of whom require oxygen therapy. In the absence of a proven therapeutic, medical oxygen and supportive respiratory care is a vital lifesaving intervention. The CHAI’s Oxygen Program aims at improving the capacity and infrastructure for sustainable oxygen delivery to both COVID-19 patients as immediate support and scale-up of oxygen therapy for broader respiratory diseases in the long run.

Position Overview

CHAI is seeking a highly motivated individual with outstanding credentials, analytical grounding, and strong problem-solving abilities. The Analyst is required to work with government officials and partners, and to help improve access to Oxygen in Zimbabwe. They must be able to establish credibility and relationships with senior leaders in the MOHCC, in CHAI and relevant partner organizations. The candidate will provide technical support across multiple workstreams – emergency oxygen response strategy, procurement, supply chain, and inventory management. The Analyst should also exhibit the following important personal qualities: resourcefulness, responsibility, tenacity, independence, energy, the highest level of integrity and have a strong professional ethic.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with CHAI Zimbabwe teams, the global CHAI Essential Medicines team, the MoHCC and relevant departments, and local partners to improve oxygen delivery as a common goal
  • Develop and support deployment of an emergency oxygen response strategy
  • Develop, conduct, and analyze the results of a rapid assessment for oxygen capacity and biomedical equipment in relation to potential COVID-19 needs and scale-up for broader respiratory diseases
  • Contribute to the strengthening of the oxygen M&E, procurement, supply chain and equipment maintenance processes and mechanisms
  • Identify new opportunities for relevant engagement and actively troubleshoot issues as they arise
  • Envision and create a sustainable system for equipment maintenance
  • Analyze and draw conclusions from data, to develop and deliver influential presentations (verbal, power point, other)
  • Provide regular reports on progress to the Manager and the Senior Technical Advisor, and perform any other duties as assigned by the Manager.

Qualifications– Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a technical or science-related field (including engineering, pharmacy, biotechnology, public health, development, or related discipline)

  • 3+ years of professional working experience, preferably in a demanding, results-driven environment
  • Excellent analytical (qualitative and quantitative) and communication (written and verbal) skills
  • Entrepreneurial mindset, including ability to work independently, self-motivate, and propose and implement new initiatives
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to think strategically, handle ambiguity and problem solve in a fast-paced, limited-structure, multicultural environment
  • Ability to be effective in high-pressure situations, to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and to set priorities
  • Willingness and ability to travel if required and at short notice

Advantages

  • Prior experience in related industries, including Biomedical/Medical engineering
  • Knowledge of supply chain management
  • Experience managing change in developing countries, and partnering with donors, branches of government, NGOs or demonstrated experience in related areas
  • Willingness and ability to travel if required and at short notice
  • Working knowledge of statistical packages, e.g., STATA, SPSS
