One Acre Fund is a non-profit social enterprise that supplies financing and training to help smallholders grow their way out of hunger and build lasting pathways to prosperity.

Analyst to the Executive Director

Preferred Start Date: As soon as possible

Job Descriptions

  • We are seeking an exceptional professional to reflect the voice of and to execute on behalf of the Executive Director.
  • As One Acre Fund grows, our Executive Director is focused on an increasingly diverse set of priorities, from communicating effectively with external partners to marshaling resources for new internal initiatives.
  • We are seeking a detail-oriented, expert communicator to work very closely with him on those priorities in a role that will help steward One Acre Fund’s overall strategy.

The role will divide into three parts:

  • Executive-level, strategic communications: We believe well-crafted communication of our strategy is critical to One Acre Fund’s success. This role will reflect the voice of our Executive Director in communications with the most important influencers in the sector and internal audiences. Most frequently, this involves researching and writing persuasive memos and presentations:
    • Example: Work with our Executive Director to write the concept note / proposal of a new strategic initiative – for use with key donors and sector influencers.
    • Example: Draft an annual strategy letter to set vision and guidance for internal staff.
    • Example: Prepare and moderate a strategy-sharing presentation for our cross-country Town Hall meetings.
  • One-off, fast analyses and tasks: These are analyses and tasks of one week or shorter duration, typically exploring a new strategic direction for the organization:
  • Example: Write a memo summarizing the current state of agricultural research on sorghum and millet in East Africa.
  • Example: Conduct research and recommend a methodology to use Purchasing Power Party (PPP) to make fair impact comparisons across countries of differing wealth.
  • Example: Plan and execute on an org-wide initiative to significantly increase the number of job candidates referred by our staff – to satisfy the hiring needs of a fast-growing organization.
  • Long-running, One Acre Fund-wide initiatives: As we become more complex, there are an increasing number of projects that do not fall cleanly into an existing department. This role will steward key initiatives across multiple silos and stakeholders, often assisting our Executive Director in implementing important priorities:

There is potential for this position to be scoped at a higher level. If so, additional responsibilities may include more active relationship management; management responsibilities for key deputies; increased scope of goal-setting and strategy-shaping for the organization.

Career Growth and Development:

  • We have a strong culture of constant learning and we invest in developing our people. You’ll have weekly check-ins with your manager, access to mentorship and training programs, and regular feedback on your performance. We hold career reviews every six months, and set aside time to discuss your aspirations and career goals.
  • You’ll have the opportunity to shape a growing organization and build a rewarding long-term career.

Qualifications

  • We are seeking exceptional professionals with 2-5+ years of work experience.
  • We are looking for truly extraordinary candidates that will help take our organization to the next levels of impact and scale. This is a competitive posting for a career–track role, with a two-year minimum.

Candidates who fit the following criteria are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • Exceptional written communicator. We are looking for clear, concise communicators who have a demonstrated ability to effectively engage a range of audiences, including internal staff, external stakeholders, and organizational leadership. Writing samples will be requested.
  • Research ability. Candidates should have experience and skills in conducting powerful secondary research.
  • Strong work experiences. Targeting former consultants (or similar skillset). Unstructured work experiences are also helpful.
  • Professional/technical skills. Ability to hit the ground running with high levels of proficiency with Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Leadership experiences at work, or outside of work.
  • Top-performing undergraduate background (please include GPA and test scores on your resume).
  • Humility and personal stability. We are looking for passionate professionals that combine strong leadership skills with good humor, patience, and a humble approach to service.
  • Language: English required.

  • Health insurance, housing, annual flights and other quality of life benefits
  • Sponsor International Candidates

One Acre Fund is a nonprofit organization that supplies smallholder farmers in East Africa with asset-based financing and agriculture training services to reduce hunger and poverty. Headquartered in Bungoma, Kenya, the organization works with farmers in rural villages throughout Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda, and Malawi.

Using a market-based approach, One Acre Fund facilitates activities and transactions at various levels of the farming value chain, including seed sourcing and market support. In 2015, farmers who worked with One Acre Fund realized a 300% return on their investment and significantly increased farm income on every planted acre.

One Acre Fund offers smallholder farmers an asset-based loan that includes: 1) distribution of seeds and fertilizer; 2) financing for farm inputs; 3) training on agriculture techniques; and 4) market facilitation to maximize profits. Each service bundle is around US$80 in value and includes crop insurance to mitigate the risks of drought and disease.

To receive the One Acre Fund loan and training, farmers must join a village group that is supported by a local One Acre Fund field officer. Field officers meet regularly with the farmer groups to coordinate delivery of farm inputs, administer trainings and to collect repayments. One Acre Fund offers a flexible repayment system: farmers may pay back their loans in any increment at any time during the growing season. Beyond their core program model, One Acre Fund also offers smallholder farmers opportunities to purchase additional products and services on credit. These include solar lights and reusable sanitary pads.
