Job Title: Business Consultant for Market-based Model for Operations and Maintenance of WASH Facilities

Location: Kebbi

Background

  • Green Habitat Initiative (GHI) is a USAID Implementing Partner for the Project for Improved Sustainability of Integrated WASH Services (72062021FA00006). The main goal of the program is to reduce water borne diseases and associated socio-economic challenges through an integrated, participatory and innovative approach that focuses on improving reliable and inclusive access to WASH services in health centers, schools and unserved / underserved communities in Kebbi and Sokoto States.
  • We are seeking the services of a Business Consultant to develop a business model on operations and maintenance of water, sanitation and hygiene facilities for The Project for Improved Sustainability of Integrated WASH Services.

Objective of the Assignment

  • The Business Development Consultant will support the GHI team in developing a strategy for implementing the business model to ensure guaranteed services for the operations and maintenance of our Water, Sanitation and Hygiene facilities and identifying further market opportunities.
  • The consultant will work towards thedevelopment and technical capacity-building of existing and potential social enterprises/entrepreneurs that are committed to the sustainability of the USAID-funded WASH investments in Kebbi State.

Scope of Work
The consultant is expected to deliver on the following work components:

Strategic Plan Development and Process Documentation:

  • Review and optimize the GHI business model with emphasis on developing a social business
  • Identify GHI’s unique selling position and opportunity
  • Lead business process strategy, process definition and documentation with the GHI team
  • Train and advise social entrepreneurs through all phases of business development from ideation and development to different stages of growth, maturity and financing.

Business Development and Establishing Strategic Partnerships:

  • Social enterprise assessment
  • Financial literacy and entrepreneurship training
  • Public-private partnerships
  • Linking enterprises to finance resources
  • Develop partnership with finance organizations like MoMo, Mobile money etc. on payment solutions.

Business System Design:

  • Design a system that monitors the flow of funds between the various actors in the business model- communities, social enterprise, Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA), Local Area Mechanics (LAMs), Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Committee) (WASHCOM) / Ward Development Committee (WDC) and social enterprise.

Risk Register Development:

  • Create a risk register to identify risks, their likelihood of occurrence, consequences and mitigation actions as well as perform management reviews.

Expected Minimum Deliverables

  • Optimized business model including financing model
  • Documented business processes
  • Business plan and key performance indicator development
  • Best practices systems research
  • Training manuals

Timeframe:

  • The consultancy is for 60 days with consideration for renewal of engagement if necessary immediate commencement.

Required Profile

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration or other related subject areas.
  • Excellent track record in supporting social enterprises / businesses / MSMEs.
  • Good understanding of water sanitation and hygiene services from a development cooperation and private sector perspective.
  • Excellent understanding of community development and its implementation and funding mechanisms (public and private).
  • Fluency in English and hausa, with excellent written and oral communication skills is an added advantage.
  • Proven track record of at least 5 years of experience in business development enterprise.
