Maiduguri, Borno State

About the Program

The overall objective of the RESILAC project is to contribute to the economic recovery and to the strengthening of the resilience and the social cohesion of the territories of the Lake Chad basin most impacted by the Lake Chad crisis and the climate change. The regions targeted by the project are located in the immediate vicinity of the main outbreak of the crisis in the four countries bordering Lake Chad: (i) Cameroon, the Far North, (ii) Niger, Diffa region, (iii) Chad, Lake region and (iv) Nigeria, Borno State. The specific objectives/pillars of the project are: (1) Strengthening human capital, social cohesion and collective and sustainable management of natural resources in targeted territories; (2) Promoting economic recovery in targeted areas and the resilience of the most vulnerable populations, especially young people and women, through access to employment and agro-sylvo-pastoral production systems intensified and adapted to climate change; (3) Valuing and consolidating the actors of the targeted territories by encouraging dialogue and commitment, and reinforcing their capacities according to the skills and roles of each one; and (4) Producing useful knowledge for the quality of project activities in a crisis context and for decision-making by local actors.

Search for Common Ground (Search) is responsible for implementation of Pillar 1 in Nigeria, in partnership with Action Against Hunger (AAH) and Neem Foundation. This will contribute to the creation of the conditions for a broad alliance in these territories by recreating social links between and within the communities most affected by the crisis and by helping victims of violence overcome their traumas and to resume trust. Collective and participatory activities will make it possible to offer means of analysis and shared actions to peacefully manage conflict, access and use of limited natural resources.

The cornerstone of all Search’s projects is the Common Ground Approach, which brings people together across dividing lines to understand each other’s differences and to work collaboratively around shared interests. Search’s unique approach cultivates dialogue and collaboration among actors in divided communities. Conflict sensitivity and Do No Harm principles are built into this wider approach by continuously assessing risks and the changing conflict dynamics at the local, regional, and national level.

Purpose of Interactive/Participatory Radio Program

In order to achieve Objective/pillar 1 (strengthening of human capital and social cohesion), participatory theatre will be conducted. Participatory theatre has long been a proven tool used by Search along with the communities to collectively reflect and critically analyze their own situation, develop, and perform artistic and cultural content that reenacts their reality, and actively engage participants in dialogue, analysis, planning, and action towards positive social transformation.

Participatory theatre is also a means of mitigating conflicts and mostly focuses on the impact violence and involvement in armed groups. These performances will trigger discussion around social cohesion and knowledge of approaches to build social cohesion in society and raise awareness on the deep trauma that results from being displaced. Furthermore, negative themes and perceptions, including stigma and discrimination of Internally Displaced Persons will be acted out to provide communities with an opportunity to voice grievances and collectively find solutions. Participatory theatre is to help people develop their conflict management skills by creating a safe environment. This will be achieved by encouraging the people to see beyond the positions and demands of those with whom they are in conflict, a vital step in conflict transformation.

The purpose of the consultancy is to use theatre to depict, directly address and stimulate action of tensions between different groups (ethnic, religious, Internally Displaced Persons and members of Host community) Gongolun, Fariya, Kirbiri, Kolori, Sabon Bolori, Kolori Futlatari and Shuwari Lamb communities of Jere LGA of Borno state and produce high quality video content which tell a clear story suitable for publishing and distribution by SFCG..

Specific objectives of the consultancy

▪ To develop and perform emotionally powerful stories/content that engages audiences and heightens the awareness to promote a shift in audiences’ attitude towards a strengthened intergroup relations and social cohesion amongst the different groups within communities.

▪ Increase the understanding of the community members on issues that heighten tensions between them in the community.

Methodology:

This radio participatory Theatre will focus on building social cohesion through a pre-recorded radio drama followed by a live phone-in program. The program will be made up an hour long 24 episodes, in which a pre-recorded drama will be presented followed by a live interactive session where the drama troupes will engage listeners to participate, reflect and proffer solutions to the issues presented. The radio theatre performances will highlight compelling conflicts from the audiences’ daily lives, and the discussion in each episode will end with a choice left to be made by the participants who will be engaged in problem-solving around issues that affect them. The program will be produced in Kanuri and aired weekly.

The topics addressed by the program will reinforce messaging from the various components of the RESILAC project with a focus on promoting social cohesion across the many dividing lines present in territories of the Lake Chad Basin – ethnicity/tribe, religion, displacement status, affiliation with formal and informal armed groups, and others.
