DKT International is a USA-based, not-for-profit social enterprise whose overall objective is to improve peoples’ lives by improving their access to sexual and reproductive health products through social marketing (please refer to www.dktinternational.org for more information).

DKT Francophone West and Central Africa (FWACA) is a programme within DKT International that covers 12 Francophone countries in the West and Central Africa region. The Cameroon Commercial Manager is responsible for leading operations in Cameroon, Chad, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and the Central African Republic. Other countries may be added or removed from this portfolio at a later date.**

Commercial Manager Responsibilities:

  1. As the Commercial Manager you will oversee all sales and marketing activities in your countries. With guidance from the Regional Sales and Marketing Manager, you will develop and implement sales and marketing strategies for your territories to ensure growth and deliver on territory business plan objectives.
  2. You will build highly motivated, highly effective, results-driven, sales and marketing teams in each country consisting of both medical and FMCG sales representatives and clinical trainers. You will deploy these teams to conduct sales and detailing calls, train pharmacists and healthcare providers, carry out trade marketing and consumer promotional events, and any other activities that will maximise sales.
  3. You will build strong networks of distributors, wholesalers, and retailers in each country to maximise distribution coverage. You will work closely with these partners to manage stock in the pipeline, and run trade and point-of-sale promotional campaigns.
  4. You will be responsible for collecting payment on all sales. You will ensure that credit is issued only in accordance with DKT’s credit guidelines, and that payments are collected within the allotted timeframe (e.g. 60 days from the date of sale).
  5. With guidance from regional teams, you will source printers, media buying agencies, and any other 3rd parties required for you to implement your sales and marketing plans. Depending on local regulations you may also have to contract and work through medical promotion agencies to manage pharmaceutical and medical device promotion and sales. You will also grow relationships with strategic external stakeholders that can support growth e.g. donors, other NGOs and the Ministry of Health
  6. You will constantly seek out new opportunities for sales growth e.g. through expanding distribution, experimenting with new promotion ideas, developing new sales channels and incentive schemes. You will constantly seek out and pursue new opportunities to improve efficiency and cost effectiveness throughout the organisation
  7. You will provide on-the-ground support to regional teams on activities such as product registration, donor reporting, and research. You will also be the “eyes and ears” of regional teams by watching for new developments in markets and competitor activities, and feeding back to regional teams.
  8. Back-office teams (financial, logistics, and operational managers) will not report directly to you (they will report to their respective regional managers), but they will have a dotted line to you, and you will ensure that the office runs smoothly and as a single well-co-ordinated unit. You will be required from time to time to act as the representative for the General Manager of DKT Cameroon, for example by signing official documentation under a Power of Attorney.
  9. You will ensure expenditure against business plan and donor budgets is always on track
  10. You will ensure that DKT activities in your territories are always in compliance with DKT policies, as well as with government and donor policies and local laws, for example ensuring that DKT has obtained the necessary permissions from the government to operate. (You will not be responsible for registering products – this is carried out by a separate team).
  11. You will manage risk in the business by identifying and mitigating against, and / or responding to, changes in the environment, competitor activity, changes in donor trends or anything else that could prevent or delay achieving objectives
  12. Any other related responsibility that the Regional Sales and Marketing Manager, or Regional Director assigns

In 1989, Phil Harvey founded the nonprofit organization DKT International to promote family planning and HIV/AIDS prevention through social marketing. For a video on Phil explaining Contraceptive Social Marketing, visit here.

Today, DKT International designs and implements social marketing programs in 20 countries around the world.  DKT programs provided over 30 million couple years of protection (CYPs)  in 2015, using standard conversion factors for Couple Years of Protection (CYP).

DKT’s sales totals for 2015 included 623 million condoms, 74 million cycles of oral contraceptives, nearly 25 million injectable contraceptives, 4.3 million IUDs, emergency contraception, implants, mifepristone/misoprostol, and manual vacuum aspiration kits.

Revenue from the sales of contraceptives and family planning services in 2012 was $105 million. Program revenues covered approximately 70 percent of our operating costs. This figure has been climbing steadily over the past several years.

Our grants and contributions in 2012 totaled $44.9 million. Our cost per CYP was less than $2, which was made possible by increasing efficiencies to near self-sufficiency in several country programs like Brazil and the Philippines. However, the higher-cost-per CYP programs, such as Bihar India, have had a major impact because their urban and rural populations have a great need for contraceptives and contraceptive services.

DKT’s contraceptive social marketing programs have been a remarkable success. While the numbers are impressive, they mask an equally important aspect of social marketing: its profound effect on people’s lives. The humanitarian impact of our social marketing programs in Latin America, Africa, and Asia has immediate and long term benefits for poor families.

Planned, healthy families have more food and clothing, and – perhaps most importantly – money for school supplies and education for the new generation of children growing up. Every year, DKT’s innovative programs are saving more lives and improving the health of more families in many of the world’s developing countries.

Rising incomes in Asia and Latin America and steady or declining prices of contraceptives have made it possible for DKT to substantially increase its revenue stream, which leads to lower donor costs per CYP. As DKT programs produce higher sales revenues, the number of CYPs generated by donor dollars also increases.

HIV/AIDS

Many of DKT’s programs have an HIV/AIDS component.  For example, DKT Ethiopia’s “Wise-Up” campaign promotes condom use among at-risk populations because increasing the use of condoms reduces the prevalence of HIV. Today, Ethiopia has the third largest estimated HIV-infected population in the world.

Recently, DKT Ethiopia produced two educational films for young audiences about “The HIV Superhighway” that highlight concurrent partnerships and HIV prevention.  These videos were produced with the assistance of Helen Epstein, the acclaimed author of The Invisible Cure:  Africa, The West, and the Fight Against AIDS (2007).
