The Opportunity

The Children on the Move Specialist will work closely with the in-country programme managers and technical advisors, as well as members of the Technical Advisory Group (regional/central advisors), to support the rollout of the EAMR foundational activities and set up of direct service provision in communities. It is of pivotal importance to ensure that a joint vision is shared among teams, as well as programmatic approaches and standards are harmonised from the very start. S/he will also be engaging with external consultants as needed and will ensure that best practices and learnings are taken into account when developing and adjusting program modalities to the specific contexts.

In order to be successful you will bring/have:

Essential

  • MSc/MA/MEng level in Social Work, Social Policy, Human Rights and Refugee Law, International Relations, Development Studies, or equivalent field experience
  • Minimum of eight years’ experience and demonstrated practical skills in developing and setting up program for children in migration/displacement settings
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with major child protection themes, key international standards and guidelines related to child protection, in particular case management and alternative care arrangements for vulnerable groups of children
  • Knowledge of inter-agency child protection standards and guidelines, such as the Inter-Agency Guidelines on the Paris Principles, Save the Children’s Child Friendly Spaces Handbook, Separated and Unaccompanied Children, Alternative care, and the Minimum Standards for Child Protection in Humanitarian Settings
  • Ability to identify child protection needs and develop a holistic response for children on the move
  • Experience in developing and refining innovative and proven models of support for vulnerable and/or hard-to-reach populations tailored to specific contexts
  • Experience in designing and delivering capacity building trainings in the field of child protection
  • Excellent reporting and managerial skills
  • Politically and culturally sensitive with a strong set of skills related to patience, tact and diplomacy
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English
  • The capacity and willingness to be extremely flexible and embracing change
  • Commitment to, and understanding of, child rights, the values and principles of Save the Children and humanitarian standards such as the Sphere Charter and the Code of Conduct
  • A flexible and initiative-taking, proactive, inspiring attitude with the ability to manage and prioritise an unpredictable workload

Desired:

  • Previous experience with SDC-funded programs
  • Solid knowledge regarding refugee, asylum seeking and migrant children related topics
  • Experience with remote management
  • Previous experience in East Africa region
  • Fluency in Arabic would be an advantage
