SOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia is a national member association to the International Federation of SOS Children’s Villages. It is non- political, not-for-profit, and non-religious social development organization focused on the wellbeing and development of children. It was founded in 1974 and has been a development partner since then with positive outcomes in the lives of many children, families and communities.

The SOS Children’s Village Program Gode is looking for a competent and able community development Officer that meets the requirements stated bellow.

Position summary

 Under the supervision of the Family and Community Development Program Coordinator, the Community Development Officer for Education   is responsible for planning, implementing, follow-up and provision of assistance on the education and vocational skills training of the target children and youth in the program so as to lead the children and youths to independence through educational successes.

Priority tasks & responsibilities

  • Leads the initial assessment of families of potential child participants
  • Facilitates the preparation of a family’s first family development plan (FDP)
  • Works with schools administration to identify the educational needs and problems of each child and on the basis of these, plans regular and tutorial educational programs that meet the needs of the individual child.
  • Organizes the system and method by which educational and child personal development data can be collected, recorded, up-dated and reported
  • Provides advice, guidance and support to Caregivers on educational issues and Identifies children who are not enrolled in school, orients families on the importance of education and convince families to send their children to school.
  • Assists or directly works on the identification of problems, educational needs of children, preparation of individualized educational plans and provision of individualized counseling and instruction.
  • Identifies alternative educational/vocational skills training opportunities for those children who are not progressing in community school.
  • Keeps informed of available vocational training and educational opportunities
  • Facilitates the distribution of scholastic materials to target children
  • Promotes parents engagement with school on the development of their children
  • Assesses capacity gaps of schools and signs agreement
  • Supports schools to implement School Improvement Program Domains (teaching and learning, learning environment, school leadership, community involvement)
  • Leads community outreach programs on importance of education via community conversation.
  • Conducts market assessment on marketable and feasible vocational skills
  • Organizes literacy and numeracy courses for the illiterate youth and caregivers running IGAs.
  • Collaborates with Value chain and market development officer in the provision of basic business training, Market and value chain training.
  • Compiles, prepares and submits reports on the educational progress of the children and youth.
  • Supports monitoring & evaluation within the program
  • Planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting of the project activities
  • Mobilization and management of the resource
  • Performs other similar duties as assigned by the Family and Community Development Program Coordinator

Job Requirements

Must criteria 

  • Education: BA Degree in Education or any related field
  • Experience: 4 years

Competencies – knowledge, skills, abilities

  • Fluent in language spoken in the program’s target communities.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Awareness and basic understanding of issues affecting orphans & vulnerable children, such as the      causes of vulnerability (e.g. HIV & AIDS, gender discrimination, poverty, etc.), local and national responses, etc.
  • Basic computer skills (Ms word, excel)
  • Understanding of child development issues, including knowledge of child rights, child protection, child welfare, childcare and parenting; and relevant local and national laws, regulations and protocols.
  • Understanding of family development and community development, and sustainability of program responses and outcomes.
  • Good analytical and reporting skills, including ability to identify problems and possible solutions, and ability to clearly reflect these in a report.
  • Counselling skills, including ability to advice, influence and guide program participants and other community members.
  • People development skills, including facilitation, coaching and mentoring skills, to build the capacities of co-workers from partner organizations; as well as of children and their care-givers, and other community members.
  • Collaboration skills, being driven to work with others and able to build strong working relationships community members and groups.
  • Experience in working with food Security project
  • Hands on experience in the promotion of IGA, SACCO/VSLA
  • Motor Cycle Driving License
