The Conflict Analyst will keep track of the unfolding social, political and conflict dynamics in Sudan and provide analytical real time conflict analysis. S/he will provide periodic and thematic conflict analysis reports to inform the program, partners, donors and other stakeholders. S/he will be responsible for the implementation of Search for Common Ground’s conflict-sensitivity engagements in Sudan.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare briefings or updates based on the review and analysis of news, incident reports from the staff and partners, interviews with key informants, and information collected from Search Sudan’s programs and early warning system
  • Prepare specific conflict analysis reports on a periodic basis, either thematic or geographic-focus based on the need and relevance
  • Serve as a hub for reporting of incidents from staff and partners as required
  • Liaise with government, civil society, security actors, donors, media, UN bodies, and the private sector as needed to further improve information in the reports
  • Carry out specific research and studies as required
  • Contribute to the proposal and report writing processes by writing the context analysis section
  • Contribute to developing curriculum and implementing the training on “conflict sensitivity and do no harm” to staff, partners and local stakeholders
  • Seek out opportunities to build partnerships with critical government, civil society, security, donor, media and private sector actors on peace and security issues in Sudan
  • Represent Search at national and international level engagements necessary for policy and program influence

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in conflict and peacebuilding studies, international relations, political sciences or related fields
  • Additional extensive training in at least one of the areas of SFCG thematic work – Peacebuilding, conflict transformation and resolution
  • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience carrying out conflict analysis, research, training on conflict sensitivity and do no harm
  • Demonstrated skills of using different conflict analysis frameworks; conflict analysis, peacebuilding or development engagement in conflict environments
  • Deep understanding of the social, political and conflict dynamics in Sudan
  • Knowledge using qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis tools
  • Knowledge of early warning systems
  • Ability to prioritize, plan and organize workflow to tight timeframes, handle multiple tasks, and be flexible with changing priorities
  • Excellent skills for policy advocacy and policy influencing on thematic conflict issues in Sudan at multiple levels
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake high-level representation and advocacy
  • Willingness to regularly travel on short notice around the country
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate and manage a diverse team in a complex environment
  • Computer literate and experience using MS Office packages
  • Strong interpersonal and networking skills, including the ability to build relationships internally and externally
  • Cross-cultural sensitivity & experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to write reports in English
  • Fluency in Arabic language required
  • Proactive, results-oriented, and service-oriented
  • Thorough understanding of the global security trends, national efforts on peace and conflict management, network with existing peace institutions and understanding of the national legal and peace policy framework

Search for Common Ground was established in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2001. SFCG’s DRC program runs multiple programs to enable Congolese at all levels of society to transform conflict without violence and build durable peace. SFCG in DRC has approximately 110 staff located in offices in Kinshasa, Bukavu, Goma, Bunia and Kalemie and collaborates with partners in all provinces. SFCG DRC’s programs use diverse peacebuilding tools including mediation, dialogue, capacity building, media productions and training,   participatory theatre, mobile cinema, comic books, joint action projects, public forums, and arts and culture approaches.  The program tackles various issues across a range of sectors, including governance, repatriation and reintegration of returnees, security sector reform, media training and professionalization, sexual and gender based violence as well as regional cohesion.
