Background

The Innovation Lab project on current and emerging threats to plant health is conducting research to develop improved management strategies for late blight, including decision support systems and population monitoring in Kenya and other countries. In Kenya, a collection of late blight will be done from major growing areas, Phytophthora infestans isolated, fungicide sensitivity assays performed, and DNA extracted from the isolates for genotyping.

Objective

  • Field Sampling of potato plant materials infected with late blight
  • Isolation of pure cultures of Phytophthora infestans
  • Molecular characterization using SSR markers and amplicon sequencing
  • Fungicide sensitivity assays

Deliverables

  • Field Sampling of potato plant materials infected with late blight
  • Isolation of pure culture of Phytophthora infestans
  • Molecular characterization using SSR markers and amplicon sequencing
  • Sensitivity test of isolates on resistance to fungicides

Selection Criteria

  • Bachelor’s degree in Plant pathology or molecular biology with background in plant pathology
  • At least 1 year of experience.
  • Experience in molecular plant pathology preferably with roots, tubers, or bananas.
  • Highly proficient in English (both spoken and written).

Time frame

  • Consultancy contract will be for 50 days.
