Overview

WUSC – World University Service of Canada – is a leading Canadian non-profit organization in international development, committed to providing education, employment and empowerment opportunities that improve the lives of millions of disadvantaged youth around the world. In Kenya, WUSC is working in partnership with Windle International Kenya (WIK) to implement projects focused on improving girls’ education: Kenya Equity in Education Project (KEEP) and Strengthening Inclusive Learning Environments (SHULE).

Teacher training is a central component to WUSC’s work in Kenya. Improving teacher effectiveness is key to improving student-learning outcomes, and to creating enabling classroom environments that allow students, especially girls, to stay in school and perform well. Under programs in Kenya, WUSC has developed a comprehensive teacher-training program and trains both regular classroom teachers and remedial classroom teachers (including nationally trained teachers and untrained teachers). The program consists of the following:

Module 1 – Basic Pedagogy Skills

Overview – This training focuses on five core areas of teaching: teacher mindset and wellbeing, planning and preparedness, lesson delivery, classroom environment, and assessment and feedback. It aims to equip teachers with basic skills and techniques to support effective learning.

Target Teachers – Regular classroom teachers (trained and untrained; host and refugee schools)

Module 2 – Gender-Responsive Pedagogy

Overview – This training focuses on gender and promoting gender-sensitive teaching where both boys and girls are supported to reach their full potential. It covers key concepts such as gender equity and gender equality, as well as exploring accommodations and techniques to promote gender-responsive pedagogy.

Target Teachers – Regular classroom teachers (trained and untrained; host and refugee schools)

Module 3 – Remedial Class Teacher Training

Overview – This training aims to equip remedial class teachers with basic skills and techniques to plan and deliver successful remedial classes for low performing girls. The content focuses on mindset and wellbeing, planning, delivery, classroom environment and checking for understanding.

Target Teachers – Remedial class teachers (untrained; host and refugee contexts)

Module 4 – Inclusive Education

Overview – This training aims to equip teachers with skills and techniques to better accommodate for students with special needs. The content focuses on physical disabilities, learning difficulties and social and emotional difficulties.

Target Teachers – Regular classroom teachers (trained and untrained; host and refugee schools) & Remedial class teachers (untrained; host and refugee contexts)

Module 5 – Instructional Leadership

Overview – This training aims to equip Senior Teachers with the skills to become an effective peer mentor/coach for fellow teachers in their school. This training focuses on how to be an effective coach and covers principles of adult learning, and how to conduct successful and supportive classroom observations and coaching sessions.

Target Teachers – Senior Teachers

Scope of Work

WUSC are seeking to expand their network of Teacher Training Consultants to support the delivery of the above training in Kakuma and Dadaab refugee camps and surrounding host communities. In consultation with the WUSC Kenya team, the consultant will be responsible for delivering some/all of the above training modules to cohorts of selected teachers. Specifically, the consultant will be responsible for:

  1. Supporting preparations for training workshops (e.g. planning meetings, preparation of powerpoints, etc.)
  2. Delivery of training content to selected teachers in Kakuma and Dadaab.
  3. Generation of reports following all delivered training.
  4. Providing feedback, recommendations and supporting revisions to training content where required.
  5. Supporting follow-ups in the field following trainings where required.

Expected Timelines

Engagement for this assignment will start in April 2019 and continue periodically over the life of our projects. Detailed timeframes and numbers of days will be discussed with the successful candidate/s.

Expected Qualifications of Consultant

  • Advanced degree in education and work experience in gender equality programming and analysis.
  • Teaching experience at the primary or secondary level or have an equivalent adult education training background.
  • Previous experience training teachers, preferably within an education in emergencies context.
  • Solid understanding of the concepts of child friendly schools, child-centered teaching and learning, and the barriers to girl child education, specifically in the KEEP context (Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps and surrounding host communities).
  • Fluent in English and Kiswahili; Knowledge of the Somali dialect would be an asset.
