Breakthrough ACTION/Nigeria (BA/N) is a five-year cooperative agreement funded through field support (October 2017-September 2022). The goal of BA/N is to increase the practice of 17 priority individual and household level behaviors and five service provider targeted behaviors in the areas of malaria; maternal, newborn, child health and nutrition (MNCH+N); family planning (FP) and reproductive health (RH); and tuberculosis (TB), while increasing the capacity of national and sub-national entities to coordinate and oversee quality SBC programming. Implementation will vary by health area across eleven states with the full complement of interventions in the three states of Kebbi, Bauchi and Sokoto.

Consultant Trainers

Breakthrough ACTION Nigeria (BA-N) is a USAID funded project with John Hopkins Centre for Communications Programs (CCP) as the lead consortium partner. It is multi-partner project with governments and other USAID partners to support Social Behaviour Change (SBC) and demand creation on priority FP/RH, Malaria and MNCH+N health behaviours in eleven (11) states across Nigeria.

The project is supporting Plateau, Kebbi, Sokoto, Bauchi States and the FCT towards achieving desired improvements in health outcomes, including increasing the demand for modern Childbirth Spacing (CBS) services to decrease maternal, infant and child illness and death. Working in collaboration with the SMOH/SPHCDA and LGAs Social Behaviour Change (SBC) community level, the project Breakthrough ACTION will stimulate demand for childbirth spacing services through activities that will increase community members’ knowledge and perception of positive social norms around childbirth spacing.

To achieve this Breakthrough ACTION is looking for qualified Short-Term Consultant Trainers in Plateau, Kebbi, Sokoto, Bauchi States and the FCT. The trainers will support and facilitate a 5-day training on Family Planning Community Mobilization and Community Capacity Strengthening. The trainers will participate in a 1-Week Training-of-Trainers (TOT) which they will step down in various LGAs of supported states.

Scope of Work

  • Participate in a 1-Week Training-of-Trainers (TOT)
  • Facilitate a 5-day training for community volunteers, supervisors and community actions groups in assigned state and LGAs.
  • Build the capacity of training participants to deliver key messages on child spacing/family planning.
  • Build the capacity of participants on developing community health action plans
  • Ensure that participants demonstrate enough knowledge, skills and competence necessary to conduct interpersonal communication (IPC), community health dialogues, compound meetings and other community level activities in their wards.
  • Draft and submit a training report required at the end of the training.

Education, Experience & Certifications

  • A degree in nursing, public health or social sciences, communication or related field
  • At least 5 years of professional experience in training in Family Planning/Reproductive Health, Malaria or other health programs
  • Proven experience in implementing public health programs or projects in selected state with good knowledge of the Nigerian public health sector
  • Knowledge of community mobilization processes with proven experience in training and building capacity for community health organizations or structures
  • Must have an understanding local language and context
  • Strong analytical, communication, computer and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent technical writing and oral presentation skills highly desired
  • A proven ability to work as part of a team and to be self-managing
  • Resident within and ability to work in the selected state
  • Ability to travel for Training-of-Trainers (TOT) if required.
