Who We Are

Girl Effect is an international non-profit that builds media that girls want, trust and need. From chatbots to chat shows, and TV dramas to tech, our content helps adolescent girls in Africa and Asia make choices and changes in their lives.

We create safe spaces for girls, sharing facts and answering questions about health, nutrition, education, and relationships, empowering girls with the skills to negotiate and redefine what they are told is possible “for a girl”.

Our reach is 50 million and counting. And we’re using technology to reach girls at scale so every girl can choose to be in control of her body, her health, her learning and her livelihood.

Because when a girl unlocks her power to make different choices that change her life, it inspires others to do so too. She starts a ripple effect that impacts her family, community, and country.

That’s the Girl Effect.

Background

With the support of MSD for Mothers, Girl Effect will design, launch, and implement an 18-month project to develop a new digital product or products that will help connect young women in Kenya to sexual and reproductive health services and products (oral contraception, IUDs, implants, consultations with gynaecologist and more. Digital technologies have opened up new ways for women to access these products and services online. However, too many barriers still prevent young women from taking advantage of these options.

Girl Effect aims to bring together young women, service providers and other key stakeholders to co-create and test prototypes and products for a new digital product or products that will work with existing platforms to expand access to healthcare across Kenya. Through this work, we aim to raise new funding to take successful products to market at scale.

Context of the Role

Girl Effect has begun a co-design process that draws on girls’ lived experiences, particularly their journeys to access SRH services and products, and harnesses their creativity and determination. The process is also designed to equip girls with the skills and tools needed to sit at the table with donors, providers, and tech experts to build the tools and services they want.

We’re seeking a consultant to support developing content for our prototype concepts. The content will be provided in Swahili and/or English and developed in partnership with a global human-centred design team at Girl Effect, responsible for designing and developing the final MVP.

  • Interpret copywriting briefs and ultimately write clear, attractive copy with a distinct voice.
  • Support translating from English to Swahili or vice versa.
  • Support creative campaign reports and presentations.

Who You Are

  • A conversational copywriter/creator with experience creating content, content and campaigns for youth audiences, especially Kenyan girls from low-middle income backgrounds.
  • Ability to deliver a clear message in a simple, straightforward, and non-judgmental manner with a fun and youthful style.
  • An effective communicator and writer in Swahili and English, with the ability to synthesize, communicate and simplify complex language concepts per the needs of girls and young women.

We exist to create a new normal with and for girls.

When a girl has self-belief and is supported by her family and community; when she's empowered with skills, ideas and knowledge; when she has access to services, role models and other girls: when she is visible and vocal - she can demand to stay in school, to get healthcare, and to get married and have children when she chooses.

We work with girls and those around them to create active champions of a world in which she reaches her full potential and the cycle of poverty is broken.

The old normal

60 %

of girls in Pakistan rarely or never feel confident to speak and be heard when in the presence of boys and men – Girls Speak Out, Plan International (2015)

84 %

of Ethiopian girls do not attend secondary school – UNICEF (2013)

14 %

of girls aged 15-19 in Ghana are already mothers – Human Rights Advocacy Centre

How we're creating a new normal

Deeply rooted in our theory of change, our unique approach to social norm change uses the latest ideas in media, technology and girl-centred community engagement to challenge discriminatory gender norms and start conversations about how girls are viewed in society.

By connecting with girls in their communities and building confidence in their own potential, we're changing the way millions of people think, feel and act towards girls. Here's how:

1:Locally rooted girl-powered culture brands that inspire girls and inform those around them through drama, journalism and music

2: Interactive technology and real-world safe spaces that connect girls to knowledge and networks that open their world

3:Groundbreaking peer-to-peer mobile research technologies that capture a deeper understanding of girls' realities in real-time
