Country Director, Democratic Republic of Congo 149 views0 applications

Overview:

Women for Women International works in some of the most dangerous places to be a woman. We serve women survivors of war in conflict and post-conflict areas around the world in 8 countries including Afghanistan, Iraq, DR Congo, Nigeria, and South Sudan. Our core belief is that stronger women build stronger nations; and with access to knowledge, resources, and a support network, a woman rebuilds her life and improves her community.

Our model works and we have the data to prove it. In our 26-year history, Women for Women International has reached over half a million women. The women we work with across 3 continents earn on average just $0.81 a day when we enroll them. At graduation, it’s $2.11, nearly tripled.

Our impact goes beyond income. The number of women who say at least one household member went to sleep hungry in the last four weeks has gone from 18% to 5%. And more women say they speak out against women’s abuse: 26% report having publicly spoken in the last 6 months against physically abusing women.

When women have the right tools, they realize the power within themselves to transform their lives, their families, their communities, and finally their entire nations.

Women for Women International began working in DRC in 2004. We have a head office in Bukavu and a sub office in Uvira with a total of 40 staff and a budget of over $2.8 Million. More than 100,000 marginalized women have graduated from our 12-month signature program of social and economic empowerment. Many women continue on with us as a part of our Change Agent program that supports graduates to work with one another and achieve change on their priority issues at the local and national level. We have also served more than 15,700 men in our Men’s Engagement Program.

We believe strong women build strong nations.

Since 1993, Women for Women International has helped more than 447,000 marginalized women in countries affected by war and conflict. We directly work with women in 8 countries offering support, tools, and access to life-changing skills to move from crisis and poverty to stability and economic self-sufficiency.

We bring women together in a safe space to learn life, business, and vocational skills.  Once enrolled, each receives a monthly stipend – a vital support that enables her to participate.

Women increase their ability to earn an income with new skills that are in-demand. They learn about their legal rights, and they become knowledgeable about health and nutrition. The result: stronger women, stronger families, and stronger communities. This ripple effect is profound.

Women for Women International delivers our programs through the generous support of individual, corporate and foundation donors, partners, and governments. Our work is regularly featured in international media, including BBC, CNN, MSNBC, The Guardian, The New York Times, 60 Minutes, and The Oprah Winfrey Show. Recognized for our global impact Women for Women International was honored with the prestigious Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize in 2006, and receives favorable ratings from independent charity groups.
