The Feed the Future Ethiopia Value Chain Activity, part of the United States Government initiative and Ethiopia’s Agricultural Growth Program II, has the strategic objective of improving smallholder productivity and commercialization. Implemented by Fintrac Inc. FTFEVCA is planning to appoint up to eight field-based dairy specialists on short-term contracts of up to 12 months.  These Dairy Extension Workers (DEWs) will plan, implement and monitor targeted training and technical assistance to smallholder milk suppliers to up to 100 milk collection centers. Each DEW will support FTFEVCA intervention in 3-6 woredas. She/he will report to and work in close coordination with FTFEVCA Regional Manager (RM), and the Dairy Value Chain Specialist. He/ She will also work closely with Woreda Dairy Extension workers, Cooperative and SME Agencies at zonal & Woreda level. It is estimated that up to 80% of the level of effort of the DEW will be to provide technical advisory services to dairy farmers, milk collection centers, and processors on good dairy practices that will increase production and improve milk quality and safety. She /he will give management advice to Cooperatives and private enterprises who collaborate with FTFEVCA on production, collection, aggregation, processing, and marketing of milk products.

Key Roles and activities:

Ø  Work with farmers, Milk Collection Centers (MCCs) and other organizations relevant to the dairy value chain to increase milk production, logistics, quality and market systems.

Ø  Provide training and technical assistance to support dairy farmers in technology adoption, including demonstrations and trials with new technologies.

Ø  Establish, maintain and manage commercial demonstrations of fodder and forage crops.

Ø  Facilitate establishment and build the capacity of new and existing milk collection centers and/or dairy processing units to ensure sustainable market access for local milk producers.

Ø  Coach and deliver management advice to cooperatives, unions and private sector enterprises on a demand basis.

Ø  Increase contacts between farmers and selected input dealers, Commercial Farm Service Centers, and other agro-dealers.

Ø  Assist the Regional Dairy Value Chain specialist to prepare annual, quarterly and monthly reports and work plans for effective execution of the project activities.

Ø  Compile and submit timely project performance and field reports and maintain proper project performance results recording and filing.

Ø  Maintain smooth coordination with Zonal Livestock, Cooperative and SME Agencies and other stakeholders

Ø  Provide supervision, support  & coaching to Woreda Extension Workers

Job Requirements

Education

Ø  A minimum qualification of Diploma in livestock and Rural Development, Agro-economics, Animal Science, Dairy Science or related field is essential

Work Experience

Ø  At least 3 years in dairy value chain management, especially in support of cooperatives, private enterprises, and extension services

Ø  Knowledge of project reporting required by USAID or other development agencies

Ø  Private sector experience will be an advantage

Ø  Experience moving by motorcycle in rural areas; willingness to travel by motorcycle for this position.

Ø  Excellent written and verbal communication skills; in English and Amharic and the regional language.
