Data Collector x3 127 views0 applications

Background

Sightsavers is an international NGO working in over 30 countries in Africa and Asia to eliminate avoidable blindness and promote the inclusion of people living with disabilities so that they can enjoy equal rights and lives free from stigma and discrimination.

From October 2020, and in partnership with the United Kingdom Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Sightsavers has been working on a project in Uganda to restore and protect people’s sight in an environment which is inclusive and accessible for marginalised groups, including women and men with disabilities. The project has been examining the differences in access to and uptake of services between people with and without disabilities.

This project is being carried out across the Karamoja region or Uganda with data to be collected in 2022 from eye health outreach camps in Moroto, Amudat, Nakapiripirit, Nabilatuk and Napak. It is hoped that evidence generated through this project will be used to inform Sightsavers and extended partner programmes.

Need for the Services

The main purpose of this role is to provide temporary data collection support to hospital staff during the delivery of eye health outreach screening services in the project areas, and to ensure high quality implementation of the disability data collection component of this project.

This data collection is required for Sightsavers to determine whether our inclusive health programmes are reaching people with disabilities and other marginalised groups, and to assess whether access to services is equitable. We utilise innovative mobile data capture to drive the collection of higher quality disability data that can be used to improve our programmes.

Nature of the Assignment

As a member of the outreach screening team, the holder of this role will assist Sightsavers in the collection of disability data through asking project beneficiaries the Washington Group Short Set of questions (WGSS). This includes working closely with project staff to ensure high quality implementation and adherence to timelines and quality assurance. The role will require a high level of attention to detail and diplomacy. The holder will be required to travel between project locations to carry out their duties.

Responsibilities

  • In conjunction with programme and hospital staff, assist with data collection activities within selected hospital and / or outreach camps.
  • Conduct interviews with project beneficiaries using the WGSS.
  • Accurately record data provided by beneficiaries using Commcare (a mobile data collection app)
  • Ensure that standard data collection procedures are followed.
  • Provide concise and accurate feedback to Sightsavers’ staff when being debriefed on the quality and success of the interviews.
  • Any other duties as assigned from time to time

Duration of the assignment

The assignment will last for between 5 and 15 days over the period of 2 to 3 months, starting in August2022. Data collectors will be required to travel and collect data on a temporary basis in line with outreach camp schedules.

Data collectors will be paid according to the number of days they were collecting data at the outreach camps, up to a maximum of five days per camp. It is possible that a data collector may attend and collect data at more than one camp during the 3-month data collection period.

The total number of days a data collector could be contracted for during the 3-month data collection period is 15 days (3 camps)

Qualifications and required skills

  • Knowledge, experience and skills in implementing surveys, experience with conducting surveys in urban settings, using mobile data collection and public health evaluations will be an added advantage.
  • A good understanding of quantitative data collection and management systems and good computer/technology skills.
  • Ability to communicate to staff and other partners in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Excellent verbal communication with the ability to work in a team.
  • Ability to prioritise multiple tasks, and use judgment and initiative in the course of executing responsibilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and high levels of cultural sensitivity. Experience of working with persons with disabilities would be an advantage.
  • Ability to follow specific instructions, and use judgment and initiative in the course of executing responsibilities
