We are looking for a Designer to join our Kigali office on a 6 month consultancy basis. You’ll be involved in working on Ni Nyampinga – our most established brand, which currently reaches 60% of Rwanda’s population with its quarterly magazine, weekly radio show, mobisite and other platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Design Manager and Designer to deliver world class conceptual, creative and design responses to creative briefs.
  • Manage the creative briefing process with photographers, illustrators and other designers to ensure content is delivered.
  • Deliver Ni Nyampinga magazine creative and artworking
  • Deliver design assets for any upcoming projects like brand campaigns, events and for digital platforms
  • Bring creativity into the business through continually seeking out and sharing creative influences from within the country, the region and international youth culture

You will need to have:

  • Strong experience in design work – specialising in editorial design with an excellent grasp of modern magazine and newspaper design
  • Experience in brand campaigns and design – ability to interpret and respond conceptually to creative briefs and create design deliverables for brand campaigns and events
  • Experience in creating design concepts and deliverables for Social Media and digital platforms desirably
  • Knowledge or experience of working with Youth Brands
  • Good presentation skills and demonstrated ability for story telling
  • Appreciation of typography paired with exceptional layout skills and logo / visual language creation
  • Knowledge of printing processes and ability to create accurate artwork
  • Experience of working closely with printers on the print floor to obtain the standards required for NN products
  • Experience of working within brand guidelines
  • Experience of working with photographers and an excellent eye for good photography, cropping and balance of image on a page
  • Excellent knowledge of image retouching
  • Experience of working with and directing illustrators, setting brief and providing feedback
  • Illustration abilities are a plus
  • Proven knowledge and excellent grasp of Adobe CS – Indesign, Illustrator, Photoshop
  • Real attention to detail and organisational skills
  • Excellent spoken and written English
  • Excellent spoken and written Kinyarwanda
  • Excellent writing and communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated, be a part of the team, and contribute to the overall success of the team
  • Detail orientated with strong organisational skills and problem solving skills, with the ability to prioritise heavy work loads
  • A proactive attitude with the ability to take initiative
  • Ability to plan and conduct work with minimal supervision.
  • Understanding and appreciation of diversity across cultures and people and have the ability to mediate and capitalise upon differences
  • A flexible approach – able to adapt to a changing environment with ease
