It runs development programmes in South Asia and Africa, works directly with businesses to improve their supply chains and does advocacy and campaigning in the UK to promote justice and fairness in international trade.

The purpose of the short-term contract is to support an ongoing project in Meru through design of interactive and effective E-trade platform for marketing agricultural commodities and training selected farmers’ champion on use of the platform.

Terms of reference for Web based platform that facilitates marketing of farmers’ farm produces in Sustainable Agriculture & Women’s Advancement: Improving Livelihoods and Establishing Women led Enterprises with Smallholder Farmers in Meru County Kenya (SAWA) project.

1. Introduction

Traidcraft Exchange (TX) is implementing a three-year project titled, Sustainable Agriculture & Women’s Advancement: Improving Livelihoods and Establishing Women led Enterprises with Smallholder Farmers in Meru County Kenya (SAWA). The project is in its final year and Traidcraft Exchange plans to support young women and men in marketing their produce through an online platform.

3. Project background and context

Sustainable Agriculture & Women’s Advancement (SAWA) Project is a three-year project (September 2018- August 2021) being implemented by Traidcraft Exchange in Meru county, Kenya with funding from UK government, as well as donations from individuals in UK. The project aims to improve the sustainable livelihoods of 2120 smallholder farmers in Meru, Kenya. SAWA project will economically empower and improve the sustainable livelihoods of 1590 women and 530 men smallholder vegetable farmers in Buuri sub-county, Meru, Kenya. There will be a 50% increase in annual net income from sales of targeted crops (Red bulb onions, Irish potatoes, carrots, and Traditional African Vegetables -TAVs). The project adapts collective organization approach improved business skills and links with private sector and government stakeholders to enhance women entrepreneurship.

The value chains in focus are potato, bulb onion, carrot, and Traditional African Vegetables (TAV).

The project expected outputs include:

Output 1: 2120 smallholder vegetable farmers are better organized and work collectively to access markets efficiently.

Output 2: 2120 smallholder vegetable farmers demonstrate improved production through adoption of sustainable agricultural practices.

Output 3: 1,590 women smallholders participating in vegetable value chains have increased influence in decision-making through participation, engagement, and leadership.

Output 4: 2120 smallholder vegetable farmers have improved access to markets and better terms of trade through partnerships with government and private sector.**

SAWA project seeks to increase the visibility, voice, choice, and control of women in the vegetable value chain. Women’s economic empowerment will be achieved by organizing and building the capacity of farmers (especially women) to enable efficient market access, improved production, and better terms of trade.

4. Objective and background of the assignment

Producers engaged in production of vegetables in Buuri Sub County have for a long time depended on traditional trade which is heavily reliant on middlemen who move from one farm to another scouting and bulking produce for distant buyers.

Most of the time farmers lack key markets operating systems information which place them at unfair advantage to properly negotiate for prices or take bold steps in engaging in self-marketing initiative. They rely on middle persons who buy at farm gate and most of the time do not offer competitive pricing to farmers. These lead to loss of income due to multiple layers of trade created along the value chain that otherwise would have been eliminated if producers took active role of involvement consequently improving their returns.

SAWA projects has a key deliverable of enabling producer groups access multiple marketing channels and capacity build them in effective use of each of them in prospecting and engaging clients while improving visibility of their engagements.

Traidcraft is looking to hire services of experienced consultant in the field of digital space to design a web based platform that is will facilitate community market and increase visibility of products to a wide clientele base.

5. Deliverables of the consultant

● Design of interactive, effective E-trade platform that has capacity to support other business support services as market price analysis and inputs suppliers’ engagements.

● For effective launch of the platform to the community, there will be need to recruit and train staff and Trainer of Trainers (TOTs) to develop appropriate content. Therefore, you will be required determine user support needs of the online marketing platform and minimum qualifications of trainer of trainers.

● Offer training support to E-trade community champions and support them to a point where they are comfortable to use the platform with minimum or no support.

● Train youth farmers and TOTs on opportunities to benefit from the existing online agribusiness marketing platforms.

6. Requirements

● Demonstrate understanding of digital landscape experience.

● Submit Curriculum vitae of key people who will work on the project.

● Company profile

● Recommendation of three clients you have worked with on similar assignments.

● Submission of detailed budget supported by detailed activities that stipulate stages of development of E-trade platform.

5. Consultant’s role

● You will relinquish all rights and access of the platform to Traidcraft Exchange and be available to offer technical support when called upon.

● Present dummy outlook of the web-based platform and how its intended to work when invited for interview

● Train Trainer of trainer (TOTs) on platform use and navigation.

6. Traidcraft role

Upon selection of the consultant, we will.

● Recruit and avail community E-trade champions per consultant recommendations.

● Facilitation of training venue and travel arrangements of E-trade champions as well as

● Offer relevant support information required to accomplishment of the task.

7. Timelines

This assessment is expected to take not more than 30 days from the day of contracting.

8. Assessment criteria

● High creativity levels- we will be seeking to have a platform that is highly interactive, simple to navigate, yet very innovative considering the target users in focus.

● Flexibility of the developer and willingness to deliver the assignments over and beyond the asks.

● Value for money will be assessed based on how costs are applied in activities outlined.
