One Acre Fund works to make African smallholder farmers more prosperous. We supply everything farmers need to grow more food and earn more income. We deliver quality farm supplies on credit, deep in rural areas, and trainings to improve farmers’ harvests. We currently serve over 1.25 million clients in seven countries across Eastern and Southern Africa, and we aim to reach 10 million farm families by 2032.

Job Description

One Acre Fund believes tree-planting is Africa’s single most powerful intervention at the intersection of climate and poverty for smallholder farmers. To realize these powerful benefits, One Acre Fund will partner with four million farmers to plant 250 million trees in sub-Saharan Africa by 2024, the first stage in an ambitious initiative to plant 1 billion trees with farm families by 2032.

In the past 3 years, One Acre Fund farmers have planted more than 40 million trees and we now have agroforestry initiatives in most of our country programs. We want to build on this early success and significantly increase the number of farm families adopting tree-planting, the number of trees planted per family, the diversity of species planted, and tree survival rates. Our tree-planting efforts are championed at the highest levels of One Acre Fund, advised by the leading agroforestry research institutes, and supported by evidence-driven environmental and livelihoods funders.

We are looking for a senior leader to guide One Acre Fund’s ambitious campaign to support smallholder farmers across east and southern Africa to plant one billion trees by 2032.

    • Grow our Network of Agroforestry Experts – you will also engage with agroforestry experts in the countries where we operate and across the globe to make sure we use the most advanced thinking in our work. You will manage and maintain these relationships directly.
  • Drive Operations to Achieve the Billion Tree Goal – You will support operations in our most critical markets to make sure we can rapidly expand our programs. Specific examples of operational efforts could include:

You will help each team develop a multi-year expansion plan and improve operational tools and processes to rapidly open new areas for operation.

For example, you will work with our leading operational teams to explore revenue generating ideas to help us improve our financial sustainability.

One Acre Fund is a nonprofit organization that supplies smallholder farmers in East Africa with asset-based financing and agriculture training services to reduce hunger and poverty. Headquartered in Bungoma, Kenya, the organization works with farmers in rural villages throughout Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda, and Malawi.

Using a market-based approach, One Acre Fund facilitates activities and transactions at various levels of the farming value chain, including seed sourcing and market support. In 2015, farmers who worked with One Acre Fund realized a 300% return on their investment and significantly increased farm income on every planted acre.

One Acre Fund offers smallholder farmers an asset-based loan that includes: 1) distribution of seeds and fertilizer; 2) financing for farm inputs; 3) training on agriculture techniques; and 4) market facilitation to maximize profits. Each service bundle is around US$80 in value and includes crop insurance to mitigate the risks of drought and disease.

To receive the One Acre Fund loan and training, farmers must join a village group that is supported by a local One Acre Fund field officer. Field officers meet regularly with the farmer groups to coordinate delivery of farm inputs, administer trainings and to collect repayments. One Acre Fund offers a flexible repayment system: farmers may pay back their loans in any increment at any time during the growing season. Beyond their core program model, One Acre Fund also offers smallholder farmers opportunities to purchase additional products and services on credit. These include solar lights and reusable sanitary pads.
