JOB SUMMARY:

The Director of Programs leads all aspects of the implementation and expansion of Lifewater International’s Vision of a Healthy Village (VHV) WASH programs in alignment with the country strategy. Providing leadership, strategic direction, management and evaluation of the Lifewater programs, the Director of Programs also plays a key role in program coordination, team leadership, external representation, and policy compliance. S/he provides leadership to each of the program managers, supports management of ongoing program activities, performs critical analysis of program data/results, oversees new program development, prepares reports for external stakeholders, and visits programs for planning, monitoring, evaluating, and coaching of staff and quality assurance.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist the Country Director in the overall management of Lifewater International Ethiopia program activities to ensure the effective and efficient use of financial, human, and material resources within policies, procedures, and work plans
  • Oversee program implementation in consultation with the relevant program managers and in accordance with the project proposals to ensure objectives are met within the required time frames and budgets
  • Represent the organization and liaise with national, regional and local authorities and with other stakeholders to facilitate successful coordination of activities and ensure transparency
  • Provide technical inputs and assistance to programs staff with particular attention toward proactive planning and reporting systems
  • Make sure that operation and maintenance, as well as environment and sustainability issues are considered and factored into program design
  • Working alongside Lifewater Headquarters, identify areas for improvement in VHV activities and strategy, and recommend to HQ adjustments to improve effectiveness; lead the rollout of programmatic enhancements across field offices
  • Guide field teams in addressing challenges that arise during program implementation to course-correct and increase quality of programming throughout the project cycle
  • Using program data and discussions with field teams, determine training and capacity needs for field staff and develop action plans, accordingly
  • Provide ongoing training and capacity building of program managers and other field staff to increase capacity and ensure sustainability of programs
  • Provide guidance for policies, practices, standards and guidelines to all field staff
  • Monitor, evaluate, and report on all program activities to Country Director

  • One-year contract with possibility of extension

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Postgraduate degree or PhD in Community Development, Development Studies, Public Health Management or a related field; more than eight years progressive NGO WASH program management experience for MA/MS; more than five years for PhD
  • Hands-on experience in managing remote teams in different locations
  • Demonstrated ability to build and deploy effective program teams
  • Strong writing, presentation and reporting skills
  • Demonstrated ability to represent organization in National and Regional-level forums
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and stream-line national policies and procedures
  • Proven capabilities in leadership and strong negotiation, interpersonal and organization skills
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond appropriately to questions from senior managers in the field and Lifewater Headquarters in California
  • Commitment to the mission, vision, and core values of Lifewater International
  • Strong desire to desire to work in and serve rural communities
