Vaccines Program:

Vaccination is widely acknowledged as one of the most cost-effective and focused disease interventions. In addition, the unprecedented wave of new vaccines expected over the next decade has the potential to dramatically reduce the global burden of disease.

In 2013, CHAI launched the vaccine program in Uganda to apply the expertise it has developed through global and other country vaccine teams to the Immunization landscape in Uganda. The CHAI Uganda team works closely with Ugandan National Extended Programme on Immunization (UNEPI) within the Ministry of Health and the national medical logistics provider, National Medical Stores; across four main focus areas which include improving management effectiveness and efficiency in the program management structure and approach within UNEPI, drive cold chain expansion and improvement, enhance forecasting, procurement and stock management processes and facilitate new vaccines introduction.

CHAI will be expanding this support to the district level to further drive sustainable and scalable impact interventions to increasing access to vaccines.

Position Description:

This position holder will report to the Senior Coordinator, Management Support and will be responsible for providing strategic planning and execution as well as technical assistance support to the districts, to increase coverage and equity.

The District Coordinator will work within existing local government structures and health governance mechanisms. Working closely with the District Health team, this position will support the implementation of key immunization priorities, ensuring close alignment and linkages with the community, health facility and national level EPI program.
To Note: Program activities will be applied to the following districts, and applicants must be willing to be based in any of the following locations:** Kumi, Butaleja, Budaka, Bududa, Kyankwanzi, Lwengo, Masaka, Buikwe, Kayunga, Iganga, Bukedea, Kaliro, Busia, Sironko.

Program Coordination:

  • Working with the Senior Coordinator, oversee district implementation of immunization interventions in target health facilities and communities
  • Support development, timely submission and tracking of annual work plans and budgets for Vaccines interventions in the selected districts of operation.
  • Represent the program in various fora, including routine district health team meetings, partner meetings, etc. to articulate immunization program priorities and recommended actions.
  • Coordinate with the district health office and other stakeholders in the delivery of Vaccines and immunization services in the districts to synergize interventions.

Technical Assistance:

  • Provide technical guidance and support to District Health Management Teams (DHMT) and implementing partners in planning and routine review of planned activities.
  • Work with the DHMT to provide support supervision and guidance to target health facilities using evidence-based best practices.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to District Health Management Teams (DHMTs) in cold chain management and submission of related reports and data.
  • Mentorship of district and health facility teams to continuously support health facilities towards improved Vaccines services using UNEPI dashboard and Data Driven Quality Improvement approaches
  • Provide overall technical support and oversight in vaccines supply projections and stock management through focal persons at district and health facility levels to ensure sufficient stock.

Reporting, Monitoring and Evaluation:

  • Ensure timely compilation and submission of quality, and accurate reports as required.
  • Provide support to program monitoring and evaluation and impact assessment efforts; working in close collaboration with the Senior Coordinator and M &E team to ensure that the data collected is accurate, valid and captures process and outcome indicators.
  • Generate evidence of service delivery challenges faced by key segments to support districts in development of coverage improvement plans.
  • Support the DHMT in ensuring compliance of health facilities to reporting requirements, and follow up with non-compliant facilities.
  • In collaboration with CHAI knowledge management staff, lead the process of documenting best practices in form of case studies, success stories, abstracts, video clips in addition to the routine reports for the work done.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor
  • Bachelor’s degree in humanities, health sciences or equivalent
  • Minimum 2 years of work experience
  • Experience working with local communities and districts in implementation of public health interventions
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, PowerPoint and Word
  • Basic analytical (qualitative and quantitative) and communication (written and verbal) skills
  • Knowledge of a local language is ideal
