Program Overview:

The five-year READ II project, funded by USAID, will boost the quality of literacy instruction and student support, reaching out to children at risk of failure and dropout caused by cognitive, emotional and physical effects of hunger, violence, and displacement. READ II seeks to better equip teachers with effective early grade reading instruction techniques and materials in seven mother-tongue languages and English, while simultaneously building a culture of reading in the school, home and community.

Position Purpose:

The Driver will provide transportation support to project staff. The Driver maintains project vehicles and log of vehicle use, cleans and follow up on vehicles services timeframe for the wellbeing of the vehicles in conformity with Creative’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

Reporting & Supervision:

The Driver will report to the Regional Logistics Officer.

Duty station:

Oromia regional office

Key Responsibilities:

  • Driving, maintaining and servicing the project vehicles in keeping with the highest safety standards.
  • Ensuring proper long-term and day-to-day maintenance of all vehicles, including checking oil and other fluids, battery, brakes, tires, and other critical equipment.
  • Performing pick-ups, deliveries, repairs and makes purchases of office supplies as directed by supervisor.
  • Arranging for the collection and delivery of mail or documents, as directed.
  • Transports authorized passengers (Creative staff, partners and guests) and goods from place to place as instructed during working hours or out of working hours as required including to and from the field.
  • Provide passengers in the vehicle with a briefing about the planned trip, i.e., route planning, timing, communication procedures, security situation, etc.
  • Follow laws regarding maximum number of passengers and use of seat belts at all times.
  • Assists passengers boarding or leaving vehicle and handles luggage.
  • Stores all required vehicle documents including: Vehicle Log Sheet, Daily Checklist, Insurance Policy, etc.
  • Records required information in a vehicle logbook such as mileage travelled, fuel consumed, destination, time of departure and arrival and submit to supervisor on a regular basis.
  • Keeps the assigned vehicle clean, greases and safeguards assigned vehicle.
  • Takes responsibility for the maintenance and safety of the vehicle assigned, tools and accessories
  • Reminds immediate supervisor to renew insurance and road license before its expiry and ensures that annual vehicles inspection is done timely and documentation is properly kept.
  • Reports accidents to his/her supervisor, insurance, and relevant authorities and provides written report.
  • Carries a proper driving license at all times; renews it yearly or as required by law.
  • Takes all preventative measures to insure that passengers and properties are not exposed to dangers and accidents.
  • Check oil, grease, fuel and other consumable items of the vehicle daily.
  • Perform any other duties that may be assigned by immediate supervisor from time to time.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma is required.
  • Diploma in Auto Mechanics.
  • Minimum of valid 3rdgrade driving license or above with excellent driving record.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in driving.
  • proficiency in Afaan oromo language. 
  • Defensive Driving Qualification is advantageous.
  • Ability to work independent with minimal or no supervision.
  • Computer literate and basic skills and qualification in motor mechanics are added advantage.
  • Proven punctuality and ability to work as part of a team and excellent references a must.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
  • Display cultural, gender, religion and age sensitivity and adaptability.
