Contract term: Consultant – Part-time, mid-February 2021 to mid-May

About the organization:

Farm Radio International is a Canadian organisation that has been working since 1979 to harness the power of radio to meet the needs of small-scale farmers. We work with more than 1,000 radio organizations located in more than 40 African countries to fight poverty and food insecurity. With the benefit of FRI resources and training, our broadcasting partners deliver practical, relevant, and timely information to tens of millions of farmers, including women farmers. We also work with a range of partners to implement radio projects that address specific development challenges and community needs. Farm Radio has offices in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Nigeria, Tanzania, Senegal, and Uganda, and works closely with a strategic partner in Malawi.

About the Farmer program e-course

Starting in February 2021, Farm Radio International will offer a 10-week facilitated online course to its broadcasting partners. This Farmer program e-course aims to give broadcasters the tools to make an engaging, entertaining, and informative farmer radio program. The course is open to any African radio broadcasters. Participants will learn through 8 modules, guided by African e-facilitators and paired up with experienced mentors.

The modules cover:

  • How to identify your audience and your audience’s information and communication needs.
  • How to design your program and differentsegments to include in your program.
  • How to carry out audience research.
  • How to tell stories.
  • How to address gender equality.
  • How to gather audience feedback.
  • How to conduct an information interview.

Participants will submit 4 assignments. After completing the final assignment, a sample episode developed through the course, participants will receive a certificate.

The Farmer program e-course will begin February 22, 2021 and run for 10 weeks. Final assignments are due April 30. The course is offered in English and French.

Description of tasks:

The ecourse facilitator will work closely with the lead facilitator to:

  1. Review the facilitators guide and course material.
  2. Review the learners / teams and plan communication for the course.
  3. Support learners to log in.
  4. Post regular messages to the course and learners, providing direction and encouragement.
  5. Communicate with participants, supporting them to login and participate.
  6. Continuously monitor the work and posts of each participant / team you are responsible for. Communicate with and support any learners who are falling behind.
  7. Regularly encourage participants with general and individual messages.
  8. Communicate with the mentors linked to your teams / participants to introduce yourself, support them to access the course, and help them with their tasks.
  9. Contribute to a short report after the course to reflect participants’ achievements, successes, and recommendations for the future.

Skills and experience

  • Diploma in education, communication, or a related field
  • 3-5 years of professional experience in adult learning.
  • 3-5 years of experience with online facilitation
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Works well independently.
  • Good understanding of digital tools, including Moodle platform.
  • Good time management and organization skills.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills and openness.
  • Knowledge of gender issues.
