Role Purpose:  

The role holder will takes responsibility for the ECD interventions in the Nitunze project (an Integrated Child Survival project) working closely with the Ministry of Education and liaising with the Health and Nutrition staff; and the relevant line Ministries to ensure that children under 5 have better access to health, nutrition and WASH services through accessing early childhood development (ECD) Centers. He/she should be knowledgeable, skilled and provide support and oversight in service delivery with emphasis on ECD. He/she will contribute to the preparation of annual work plans, capacity building of teachers, parents and liaison with community health volunteers. Nitunze project aims to ensure that children under 5 in Turkana North sub county in Kenya survive and thrive.  This 3-year project will apply a WHO-approved integrated approach to ensure that children under 5 recover from common childhood diseases. That malnourished child under 5 are successfully treated; that families have enough resources and knowledge to feed their children; that children under 5 have access to safe drinking water and good hygiene and sanitary conditions.

Key Areas of Accountability

Technical assistance, quality and capacity building

The Project Officer. ECD will oversee the ECD interventions within the Nitunze project, working closely with teachers and parents.

Provide support in the day to day implementation of integrated ECD and ensure a conducive learning environment for the young children.

Ensure participation of parents and community members are empowered to increase their participation beyond provision of physical facilities

Establish and maintain good working relationships with the Ministry of Education and key education stakeholders at the county and sub-county level to ensure effective and efficient implementation of the program

Responsible for planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the ECD interventions and budget tracking to ensure the smooth running of all the targeted activities

Produce timely progress reports both narrative and financial, and input into regular situation reports, monthly and quarterly reporting

Ensure any feedback from beneficiaries or target communities is shared and responded to appropriately or raised with the ECD Coordinator, Program Manager, and MEAL focal person, if needed

Representation and advocacy

 Work closely with Ministry of Education at the county and sub-county level.

  Work with partners to further Save the Children’s mission for children

 Knowledge management

Contribute to documentation of case studies and human-interest stories.

Work with technical resources among Save the Children members to facilitate sharing and learnings in ECD integrated with health and nutrition

Contract Duration: 12 Months

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

At least Degree in ECD, social work/social sciences, education, developments studies or equivalent.

At least three (3) years relevant experience in education with experience in ECD, coordination and sector integration.

Experience in management of funded projects is a plus.

Fluent in English and Kiswahili (both spoken and written) and demonstrable competence in report writing

Experience of financial planning and expenditure monitoring

Experience of community participation, ownership and empowerment

Competent in using email and computer packages such as Word and Excel

Commitment to Save the Children’s child safeguarding Policy

Able to work effectively in a multi-cultural environment and as part of a team
