 CORDAID has been in operation in Ethiopia since 2006 and has set up an Internship Program in 2019. The primary objective of the Internship is to provide youth with education with work skills that enhance the Intern’s education with the aim of increased employability both within Cordaid or elsewhere. The Interns obtain rigorous orientation in financial management, program cycle and program management and are given ample opportunities to participate in CORDAID activities, interact with staff in various departments, and hone their skills in operations and technical areas.

 CORDAID is currently looking for an Emergency Programs Technical Intern.

Purpose of this Position

The Emergency Programs Technical Intern will work with CORDAID technical staff to support programs that aim to provide emergency aid to those in need. This ideal candidate will have some experience working with NGOs, preferably in the emergency sector. Upon successful of the internship period, CORDAID Ethiopia intends to transition the Intern to a technical position within the Humanitarian Team.

Specific Responsibilities and Duties of the intern include:

  • Supporting the Head Programs in putting together concept notes, project brochures and documenting program successes;
  • Participating in relevant thematic cluster meetings, taking minutes, reporting the same to the supervisor;
  • Support the team in conducting need assessment in emergency settings putting together a response plan;
  • Actively participating in building the capacity of Cordaid partners in humanitarian sector activities;
  • Supporting the preparation of appeals, emergency response plans, and recovery related activities;
  • Preparing & disseminating sitreps, on social media/other means in case of acute emergency situations; and
  • Supporting administrative tasks including scheduling, organizing conferences, workshops and trainings.

 Contract Type & Duration  :-6 Months Contract, with monthly stipend payments

Job Requirements

  • Relevant university study, preferably social studies or related field;
  • Experience working in NGOs working in emergency and humanitarian programming is highly preferred;
  • Experience with putting together concept notes, proposals and reports writing highly preferred;
  • Experience in participating in high level meetings representing one’s organization highly preferred;
  • Experience contributing to capacity building initiatives of CBOs / NGOs preferred;
  • Experience with social media required;
  • Excellent English writing ability required;
  • Able to assure confidentiality;
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people; and
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office package.

Cordaid is the Catholic Organisation for Relief and Development Aid (CORDAID). It is one of the biggest international development organizations, with a network of around a thousand partner organisations in 36 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, and has a disposable annual budget of around 170 million euros (2006).

 Cordaid directly employs 400 people, amongst them 300 are based in the Netherlands and the rest are stationed all over the world (2010). Cordaid is also known under the names of the funds it manages: Cordaid Memisa, Cordaid Mensen in Nood (People in Need), Cordaid Bond Zonder Naam (Association Without Name), Cordaid Kinderstem (Children's Voice).

Cordaid was founded in 1999 in The Hague, with the aim of helping people in distress and fighting structural poverty. It is a merge of three Dutch Catholic development organisations: Memisa Medicus Mundi (created in 1925), Mensen in Nood (People in Need, created in 1914) and Lenten Campaign/Bilance. The history of these organisations goes back to the beginning of the 20th century when the organisations were active in the area of shelter and (missionary) care for refugees, providing direct aid in the event of disasters, medical care and direct improvement of social and economic position of poor people.

The merge allowed the newly created NGO to benefit from broader resources, rationalised management and organisation and aimed at coordinating actions and projects. Each organisation became a fund with Kinderstem (Children's voice) being part of Mensen in Nood, until October 2004, when Cordaid's General Assembly voted the creation of a separate fund focusing on aid to children living in slums. Cordaid Microcredit was formed in October 2006, following the tenth anniversary of the microfinance activities. On 1 January 2007, the Dutch NGO Bond Zonder Naam (founded in 1938) joined Cordaid. Since 2012 the campaigning cooperation with the Lenten Campaign Foundation ('Vastenaktie') has ended.
