Child Welfare Durban seeks to appoint an Enrolled Nurse to be based in Durban.

Enrolled Nurse’ are professionals/experts who are oftentimes expected to deal with vulnerable children and adolescents. The Enrolled Nurse is required to be social as their job frequently involves working with, communicating with, and teaching people. Enrolled Nurse duties often involve helping or providing service to others.  Within this Organisation they are primarily responsible for:

  • Seeking to improve the physical, emotional, intellectual as well as social development of children;
  • Establish a one on one relationship with the children and coordinate treatment interventions for them within the Child and Youth Care Institution;

The Enrolled Nurse’s role is to support the Residential Social Work Manager in providing the best quality childcare in a safe and care focused environment for the young people.  When on shift you will have initial responsibilities for monitoring and supervision of assigned staff and take responsibility for the day to day management, and guidance of colleagues whilst ensuring the welfare and care of the young people

The Employee as Enrolled Nurse shall from time to time perform the following tasks (which are by no means exhaustive).

  • Maintain and apply evidenced-based care for Residential Care residents.
  • Provide quality healthcare services for our Residential Care residents.
  • Assists and promotes Organisational strategies by ensuring duties are performed within legislative compliance.
  • Keep records on individual children, including daily observations and information about activities, meals served, and medications administered.
  • Identifying information by categorizing, estimating, recognizing differences or similarities, and detecting changes in circumstances or events for example recognizing of childhood diseases and physical or emotional abuse.
  • Monitoring and reviewing information from materials, events, or the environment, to detect or assess problems by maintaining a safe environment for children and observing children’s condition
  • Using hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials, and manipulating things.
  • Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials, example lifting or transporting ill or injured children and participating in recreational activities.
  • Providing personal assistance, medical attention, emotional support, or other personal care to others such as co-workers, stakeholders, or children.
  • Assessing, providing and supervising care needs of residents
  • Accessing, observing, reporting and liaising with the Senior staff and referral agencies regarding
  • general and specific physical and mental conditions of residents which require further intervention.
  • Involvement in the review and implementation of OH&S, quality systems and relevant policies
  • and procedures.
  • The Enrolled Nurse is expected to respect and accept that everyone and everyone’s role within
  • the facility is valued and necessary to achieve the objectives of the facility
    • Nursing staff would be expected to advocate on behalf of the resident to create a safe home like and trusted environment.
    • Collegial collaboration in all aspects of care management.
    • Maintenance of child care enrolled nurse skill level via ongoing education.
    • Collection and evaluation of clinical data, and implementation of appropriate management strategies.
    • Active participation in clinical leadership meetings and other facility and Residential activities.
    • Respecting the values, customs and spiritual beliefs of individuals and groups.
    • Apply evidenced based practice to clinical domain
    • Ability to recognise changes to resident’s health status and report to Manager.
    • Assessment and documentation of resident care needs in consultation with the Manager, general practitioner, and other members of the facility.
    • Monitor and evaluate progress towards children’s expected outcomes as defined.
    • Administer all medication according to policy guidelines.
    • Develop professional and ethical practice.
    • Able to function and accept responsibility for own practice in accordance with legislation and
    • common law affecting nursing practice.
    • Practice within the limitations of the Enrolled Nurse scope of practice.
    • Maintains confidentiality.
    • Participate in quality programs conducted within department.
    • Participation in audit processes in the facility.
    • Proactive participation in the continuous improvement process of the facility and organisation, including staff appraisals.
    • Proactively seeks educational opportunities.
    • Advocacy and management of residential care rights.
    • Enable continuity of service through teamwork.
    • Assisting in maintaining a safe environment for self and others.
    • Demonstrating effective communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Recognise the role of members of the health team.
    • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with colleagues and members of the
    • health care team.
    • Communicate accurately and effectively with children and members of the health care
    • Team.
    • Act to maintain the dignity and integrity of individuals and groups
