Job Location: Ward Level – Operate from Maikona Ward & cover both Maikona and Turbi Wards

Contract Details:

Five (5) Months Fixed Term Renewable Contract Subject to Availability of Funds and Performance

Job Summary:

To develop capacity and support target communities on livelihoods related matters in specified administrative wards of Maikona and Turbi of North Horr Sub County

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

§ Work closely with the line government departments at the ward level including the Ward and Village Administrators, Village Development Committees, Ward Livestock Production Officer, Ward water officer, Ward animal health technician, Ward crop production officer and ward public health team and Community Development Facilitators who are also based in the targeted administrative wards

§ Provide technical leadership and mentorship to target community groups such as Natural Resource Management groups, Income Generating Groups, Pastoralist Field School Groups, Community Disaster Management Committees and Livestock Marketing Associations amongst others. The technical leadership and mentorship to the groups will entail motivating the group members to undertake the planned activities, document the progress made and provide appropriate feedback to the line manager on support needed for the target groups.

§ Support the target community groups and individuals in target communities in developing work plans and/or action plans as appropriate.

§ Support the target community groups and individuals in target communities access and link with relevant government and private sector actors located within the relevant wards where the field officer is located

§ Link target community groups with government line departments at ward level for continued support

§ Document case studies, at least one (1) every month clearly demonstrating changes that are happening within the target communities. This will be through close guidance from the line manager and the M&E Officer in Marsabit

§ Represent Concern Worldwide at ward and administrative village level development and coordination forums. All meetings attended will be clearly documented and the information shared to the Line Manager

§ Inform the line manager and the Manager – Livelihoods of any planned coordination meetings and community participation events happening immediately the government officers publicize the event and ideally before the planned event happens

Responding to Emergencies:

· Participate and contribute as necessary towards Concern’s Emergency response as and when necessary

· Comply with Concern’s health, safety and security guidelines during emergencies

Programme Participant Protection Policy

· To adhere to the standards of conduct outlined in the Programme Participant Protection Policy and Concern Code of Conduct

Job Specification:

§ A diploma in community development, social sciences, livestock production, entrepreneurship, animal health, agriculture, water engineering or any other relevant field

§ At least two years’ experience in implementing community projects in at least one ward of the specified Sub Counties

§ Must be willing to ride a motorbike. A valid motor bike license is an added advantage

§ Strong written and oral communication, computing and report writing skills

§ Be able to work independently as well as in a team

§ Be willing to accept responsibility and to show good judgment, initiative, and resourcefulness

§ Must be a resident of either Maikona or Turbi wards of North Horr Sub County

§ Fluency in both spoken and written language in: English, Swahili and at least one of the local Marsabit County languages (spoken in Laisamis, North Horr and Moyale sub County)

Concern was founded by John and Kay O’Loughlin-Kennedy in 1968, as a response to the famine in the Nigerian province of Biafra. The famine was largely precipitated by the conflict that followed Biafra’s attempt to secede from Nigeria.

John’s brother, Father Raymond Kennedy, a Holy Ghost Priest, had returned to Ireland from Nigeria with news about the plight of people in Biafra where widespread famine was becoming a reality due to the Nigerian blockade of food, medicines, fuel and basic necessities.

John, Kay and Raymond held a press conference in the Shelbourne Hotel to raise awareness and funds. This allowed them send the first ‘mercy flight’ to Biafra.

But much more was needed,  some weeks later a larger meeting was called in the home of John and Kay, Africa Concern was formed and the fundraising continued.

Send One Ship

Africa Concern with the Knights of Columbanus launched an appeal in June 1968 for the famine in Biafra with the slogan "Send One Ship".

Becoming Concern

On 29 September, a 600 tonne ship named the Columcille arrived at Sao Tome, a Portuguese island off the coast of Biafra, filled with vital supplies of powdered food, medicines, and batteries. In 1970, a huge cyclone hit East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and the public were asked to respond. Africa Concern simply became Concern.
