As an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations, the federally owned Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its development-policy objectives. GIZ promotes complex reforms and change processes.

In Ethiopia, GIZ has been working for more than 40 years in bilateral cooperation on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and on the commission of the Ethiopian government and international donors. GIZ Ethiopia is looking to recruit a field officer for the coordination of activities on site for the implementation of a sustainable supply chains project (with a focus on coffee) for the Biodiversity and Forest, as specified below.

 

Position:  Field coordinator in sustainable supply chains (focus on coffee)

Place of Work:  Metu (Ilu Bator Zone, with field trips to Nono Woreda)

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent of this post has the main responsibility for the:

  • Coordination of the project in the field under the guidance of the head of project
  • Communication with stakeholders of coffee and forestry sector
  • Analysis of non-timber-forest-product value chains (with a focus on coffee)
  • Capacity building to the people along the focus value chains
  • Monitoring and reporting on the overall project’s activities

The Tasks

Coordination of the project under the guidance of the head of project

  • To keep all stakeholders informed about the ongoing project
  • To gather and process all incoming information and share it with stakeholders
  • To keep contact with involved Unions, traders, official authorities and stakeholders
  • To coordinate activities of the project staff in the field
  • To report on project activities

Communication with stakeholders of coffee sector

  • To be aware of what is being done locally and nationally in the coffee sector
  • To support the dialogue between the stakeholders at different levels
  • To create and/or support market linkages
  • To technically support the activities of actors in the coffee sector to achieve the project objectives
  • To advise stakeholders and local authorities on sustainable supply chain development, forest and land management, and support them technically
  • To work closely with the Biosphere Reserve management unit and to identify common activities
  • To coordinate activities with other projects working in the area.

 Analysis of Non-timber-Forest-Products’ value chains (focus on coffee)

  • To analyse the current value chains of Non-Timber-Forest Products with focus on coffee from the production to the client
  • To identify gaps and bottle necks in this value chain
  • To identify needs for innovation in the value chain (e.g. for processing and marketing) and initiate measures accordingly
  • To identify potentials to make the value chain more inclusive and propose measures accordingly
  • To identify potentials to use innovative digital tools along the value chain

 Capacity building to stakeholders along the value chain

  • To assess needs for capacity building in the sustainable growing region and sustainable supply chains
  • To elaborate and update a capacity development strategy and implement it
  • To elaborate and propose training contents and organize the delivery
  • To improve the traceability of products from the region
  • Support the introduction of sustainability approaches, standards and labels along the supply chain

Monitoring and reporting on the overall project’s activities

  • To establish a monitoring system for the project and report on regular basis
  • To support the establishment of a monitoring system for forests regarding intensified coffee production
  • To carry out data collection and monitoring reports
  • To verify results, analyse and compare them with those of other organizations working in the area

Other responsibilities

  • To ensure that the rules and regulations of GIZ are always respected
  • To take actively part in meetings, workshops etc. on own initiative and on demand
  • To keep in touch with all other projects of GIZ – BFP and similar undertakings
  • To be actively involved in transversal tasks (gender, youth employment conflict sensitivity, etc.)

Job Requirements

Qualifications required

  • Degree in Economy, NRM, or related subject;
  • Good understanding of value chain management
  • Minimum of 5 years professional experience in value chains
  • Understanding of participative forest management, and forest landscape restoration
  • Good mastering of the English and Oromifa,
