Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) is seeking a competent and highly motivated Head of Finance & Administration to join our team in Malawi. In this vital role, under NCA’s Country Director (CD), you will have the exciting opportunity to oversee and further develop the financial team, provide sound leadership, as well as build internal capacity of staff and local partners. The HoFA has in cooperation with the management team the overall responsibility for ensuring that funds entrusted to NCA’s country office and programme in Malawi are handled in a transparent, efficient and effective manner.

In 2020, NCA is growing in terms of funding and size which includes a merger with Danish DanChurchAid (DCA) into a Joint Country Programme commencing in 2021. The HoFA is a part of the management team at the NCA Country Office and must contribute to the strategic development including the merger with DCA. The HoFA has responsibility for management of the finance team, delegate work and secure those manuals, formats, procedures, systems are known and used correctly. The HoFA is overall responsible for meeting internal as well as external deadlines in relation to finance and administration.

This is a two-year contract with a start date in early 2020. Please note that the position is based in Lilongwe with frequent travels in Malawi and some international travels. Lilongwe is classified as a moderate risk area and for this role is a non-family duty station.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Management and quality assurance of the financial, budgeting, reporting and accounting functions for NCA Malawi in line with NCA’s online policies, systems and guidelines as well as relevant laws in Malawi, including back donor compliance and reporting
  • Overall responsible for ensuing partners capacity building in finance and procurement.
  • IT, office and administration management including management and maintenance of assets.
  • Procurement and logistics management in NCA office and programmes.
  • Promote and ensure cooperation in the management team and between the units in the country office.
  • Overall responsible for NCA’s anti-corruption work, complaints and CHS.
  • Promotion of and ensuring cost-effectiveness and optimizing use of resources.
  • Supervision and line manager for finance and administration staff including performance development reviews.

Qualifications

  • Relevant education in Finance, Management or Accounting.
  • At least 8 years’ experience in financial/administrative management in an International non-governmental organizations (INGO) or an International company, including external audit, partner management, project management and grants management
  • Practical experience in using the finance system Maconomy (ERP) is a requirement.
  • Relevant academic degree within finance – ACCA or MBA in Finance Management, profound knowledge of accounting, experience from working with ERP and accounting software systems with good understanding and familiarity with the principles of the international financial standards.
  • Experience and knowledge in project management and/or extensive coordination of a program.
  • Understanding of major back donors’ rules and regulations and general conditions
  • Experience and knowledge in team management.

Personal qualities

  • Flexible, patient and persistent with good facilitation and coaching skills
  • Experience in working in developing countries, specifically in Africa, and proven ability to understand and adapt to local customs and cultural settings will be considered an advantage
  • A team player with an open, humorous disposition
  • Fluency in spoken and written English
  • The person employed must be loyal to Norwegian Church Aid´s Christian values
